65 Water Pump ?
« on: July 13, 2016, 02:00:15 PM »
Can't believe this hasn't been asked and answered but I can't locate any info with SEARCH function.  For my May, 65, San Jose, A code, non-air 4 speed car what is the ' correct ' water pump ?  Thanks,  Brian

For a May '65, most likely an aluminum water pump.  The cast iron came out late May, beginning of June.  If your engine tag shows level 8, it will be cast iron.  Earlier levels would be aluminum.

Thank you Charles.  Engine tag is long gone.  Do have the original carb. and tag. So that would make it an aluminum pump with the C5AE-8505-C casting ?  Brian

Yes, you want the -C casting.  The -D is the service replacement, slightly different, but noticeable.

Brian,
The water pump implementation date is more of a function of the engine build date than the date on the door data tag, a close function of your VIN. My May 11, 65, San Jose GT Fastback has an aluminum pump with an engine build date of 5C10.
Yes, you want the -C casting.  The -D is the service replacement, slightly different, but noticeable.

Thank you guys.  C5AE-C it is.  Did some e-bay looking around and of course a little surprised at the $.  I base the build date, best guess, on the glove box Owners Manual w/owner card and the date the car was picked up the the dealership May 29, 1965.  Not on the door data plate June 1, 1965.
Jim; thanks for sharing the engine tag info on your car.  If you have you original carb tag ?   To carry this a step further ?   A quote from The Marti Tag Book speaking of 65 carburetor tags pg.97 "the engineering change level, similar to the engine tag change level ".   That engineering change level is the first letter of the bottom line on my tag ' C '.  Same as yours Jim ?  Thanks,  Brian
