Per her build page:

"We found 4  layers of paint on the car: the green factory primer, the original light silver blue metallic paint, a THICK layer of brown primer, and then the current paint. The car had white racing stripes at some point in time but the previous owners painted back over that, so on the hood / roof / decklid there were multiple layers of paint."

So the white in the shock towers is still a mystery.

I would add that that the "green factory primer" also since it does not match other examples.  Guess it will remain a mystery and oddity if original. A single car by itself would need some more examples IMHO before any findings are going to be taken as factory findings by themselves

Well, now you guys have gone and made me make a username on this forum - and as you all know, I have no business being on a concours forum!

To clarify - the car appears to only have ever had two paint jobs before I got my paws on it. Mint green primer, factory silver blue metallic, then another coat of brown primer and the dark blue paint job. When we stripped the car, all parts of the car (sans a couple of patches and the lower quarters, which were apparently done when the dark blue paint got put on) had the same 4 layers of color.

While it's possible the car has been clipped, I doubt it. The frame is straight as can be, the cowl is perfect and unmolested (one of the very few original unrotted cowls out there, I'd wager), firewall unblemished, blah blah.

Interestingly, the inside of the shock tower cover is also white. The shock towers are the only two spots on the car where I have seen white paint. It is not overlaying anything as I picked off a flake and got down to bare metal.

What does it mean? Who knows! Wouldn't be the first (or the hundredth, or the thousandth) weird thing I've found on this car. She is just an oddity.

Welcome aboard, Kelly!  Even if you don't have concours aspirations, you can still learn a lot from this forum.  I've been working on my Mustang for over 35 years, and I'm still discovering new details thanks to this forum.

As a point of clarification, you refer to "green" primer under your original silver blue. It seems from the picture of your door, which I posted earlier, there are actually traces of gray primers under the factory paint, which would be consistent with the factory primer on my late 65 Metuchen silver blue hardtop.  It is hard to be sure from the pictures, but the green spots look like some type of body filler.

Agree, normal application would be red-oxide primer to bare metal, followed by a gray sealer primer (to external facing surfaces) and then body color.

The door looks like there has been a lot of damage and filler applied.  I don't see any 'green' primer.

As much work has been noted as being done to this particular car, I would be hard-pressed at using it as a reliable reference for factory details.
