66 White primer?
« on: June 09, 2016, 01:25:34 AM »
This is a friends car.  Originally silver blue.  Was never white, but is white under spring covers.  Is this batch paint?

I doubt it was batch paint.  Could have been a worker clearing out their gun from the previous painted car.  Have seen that before, but not that much paint.

Would need to strip off the undercoat to get a better idea of coverage.  Maybe PO coated?

+1 Your only seeing a small part of the picture. Could be more clues hidden under the undercoating. Good thing is that their likely well protected from the elements

You might check if there is black under the white...

Can you share where and when the car was built?  And I'm guessing that since the statement was made that the car had never been white someone has stripped the car down to metal (at the back half of the car) and the car still retained the original paint.

Maybe check some of the unibody's sheet metal stamping dates.

I have to agree it is rather odd having the white in there (as others have said already). Personally, I would also  have to wonder now if it is a re-body and IF it perhaps IS a rebody, finding a date-correct donor MAY have not been high on the "numbers matching" hunt back in whatever day it MAY have occurred.

But even if a rebody, it shouldn't have white there

Have seen body color up to the radiator support on a very very few 65-66's. I just figured that it was the new guy painting everything before someone told them they were wasting time, paint and money. One Dearborn cars we sometimes find body color that far forward (not often under the inner fender panel lip for the fenders) since that would require the painter to bend down and shot up - basically making an effort to cover that surface.

The issue, I think, is that its reported that the white does not match the exterior color. Maybe this is where a replaced clip or something else comes into the possibilities. But as you mentioned the front area is not getting cleaned and stripped to show if this is the possible result of some previous owner modifications or something else

Guess you could look closer at those areas around where the spring cover was. Looks like either paint transfer (from the spring cover to the inner panel) or white paint removal when it was taken off. Pictures small but some of the holes look like there could be black under the white

There are lots of pictures of the car during restoration on the Calamity Jane Build Page website.  The door, at least, looks like factory silver blue.

I am told that there was no color under the white.  It was on bare metal.  And the originafl blue was over all that including the trunk.

What we do know from what the owner has said (written) is that Jane was purchased in Sept 2010. It then had a FI throttle body on a 289ci V8, 4-speed toploader, 9", rack and pinion and sub frame connectors installed in it. So someone had done a bit of work to it earlier in its life. September 2011 both doors were replaced, lower quarters and trunk drop off's were replaced, tail light panel replaced and the car was repainted. As they took the car apart to paint it, there was no mention of any damage to the front end. The car was rear ended in April 2013, and came out of the body shop Dec of the same year. The trunk lid, both lower quarters, and everything behind the arch of the rear tires including the frame rails was replaced. No info on how much of the car was re-painted.
Accurate looking but not a Concours Restoration/build. See my build photo gallery at 69GT350 Hertz Build

So we have accounted now for 6 years of calamities...now all we need is the other 44 years of history and we might get a tiny clue why some white paint ended up in this area. If this car has been a sort of "Christine" for it's previous owners, there is no telling how many "rebuilds" she went through!
