67 Wire Harness ID Tags, Where and how are they attached?
« on: June 07, 2016, 07:22:18 PM »
Several wiring harness tags are being reproduced and available at many vendors. Some vendors such as NPD list the "Where to install them" but in a generic way, covering every application as the same.

Working on a 67 SJ Mustang GT 289 with tach, known available to buy are:
* Alternator Harness
* Headlight harness (at headlights)
* Headlight/Underhood Harness
* Underdash Harness (this one I have original location but a clear picture may help)
* Taillight Harness

Other items I have not found are (but would like to locate):
* Instrument Cluster (w/tach)
* Hood Harness (turn signal lamps)

I could use help, possibly best in pictures, even if only SIMILAR build, so I might see how and where to wrap these sticker-tags as close as the original make may have done them.

With the few tach dash cluster harnesses I've seen with stickers, the location seems to be the same as non-tach dash cluster harnesses.  However, I don't have pictures to verify that statement.

Hello Richard,

Probably a stupid question from me, but there are other wire harness ID tags then mentioned ?
Or you only need the positions of those that you have listed?
in attachment 2 pictures of an ID tag in the door for the speakers.
Again, if not necessary, I will delete my post.

Pretty much always seen them wrapped around the wire look rather than being applied like a "flag" for lack of a better term originally on 67's from what I recall.

Normally though the years a red label is at the end (normally just before the woven covering ends) of the taillight wire loom on the passenger side. Also you may find white black (except for a black printed number) assembler labels near the identifying labels on looms

Here are four that I found passing through my files looking for rocker moulding details ;)

Didn't start labeling the pictures with the body type and engine size till I realized (on those shots) that that info might be helpful given different applications and likely different looms

7T01T1310xx Transmission loom label

These do help, the comment on how affixed (flag or wrapped) was another question answered too. I have seen a few replacement NOS hasnesses "flagged" and wondered if possibly the "flag" broke off over time.

Thanks!

IF the originals were "flagged"  (you heard the term here first ;) LO then we would find a break at the loom with two ends visible. Instead its been my experience that they were wrapped (one end could come loose and look flagged rather than having two ends form the flag) so you can unwind and get a better look at the original coloration and markings on the unexposed surface

Believe I have a collection of pictures of labels removed from looms. Used these to create my own wire loom labels for a restoration. Was a cool project where I figured out how to get all the wire loom labels for a specific car on one page of printer paper, was able to print it out on the home computer printer, cut them, laminate them (as done on some years and applications) and apply them to looms. Now if someone only had the time to do all years and applications think they would be popular. Oh well off to look for some pictures for the discussion.  ;)

If I might make a suggestion, mark the location of the wire tags found in this post (and any others) in the Electrical Assembly Manual for your car's year. I did this a while back for my 66 Fastback, and included the color of the tag. You might not need it right this minute but sometime in the future you will. That sounds like such a good idea, I think I'll mark up my 67 Electrical Manual, just for practice.

Good idea. Another possibility it to make a photocopy :) of the page and start building your own binder (with your notes) for your car. Could have a page(s) noting where you found the details on your looms and another showing what you've seen (make sure the cars are a decent match) on other examples. Every car I build has a binder or folder with a constantly change to do list on the front a directory in my computer with notes and help pictures.

Maybe we should think of starting a restoration support thread to see what everyone has found useful like this to help all through their restorations

Did also look through my pictures of 68s (while looking for pictures to help with another thread)  and I did find a couple of labels applied in the flag form. Still IMHO still a small percentage. But it did remind be of an experience that I think I've shared once before on the site related to wire looms. We understand that the looms were assembled by a number of contractors and we can see differences in the way they were assembled - one example is the way the end of the wrap is treated. Glued or warped were just two of the methods used and explained by using different suppliers. Each of these suppliers apparently used many sub contractors to get these made.

The story I have to share is that during a family vacation we traveled across the dry south west and stopped at a gas station out in the middle of no where. During our attempt of stretching out legs and answering the call of mother nature my dad stuck his head in the work bays of the garage area and the family that owned the gas station had tables set up so that the kids, mom and pop when they were not busy with customers would put together wire looms for the electric/power seats for Thunderbirds being built that year for some company.  Being a kid it didn't mean much to be at the time but since we were a car family it stuck with me through all these years. Wonder how many hundreds of other small little suppliers were making money doing the same across the country.

Will be starting and posting the 68 examples I found to another thread like 67gtasanjose has started here -  hoping that it will help others in the future

Will also add to the thread that you can often find (like the engine ID sticker) still see the zig-zag torn edge of the label where it was taken from a larger roll. Example is a 71 example that was handy

Two more unseen (once the car is assembled) label locations

Non-tach gauge loom labels. Assembler and identification labels

Overhead console loom labels

OK, I wrapped several of these reproduction tags (Purchased from NPD using returned item credit) but they are already lifting off!  :o ??? The adhesive if VERY lacking in quality. I'm working on spotless clean, used under dash wiring and brand new Alloy Metal underhood wiring with clean hands, NOT handling the adhesive side before installing so I doubt I made and procedural error  :(

Suggestions for a different adhesive that could be used? Something that puts up with a little underhood heat?

On my '69 I cut strips of clear packing tape and wrapped the tags on under the dash and console looms. I didn't do this under the hood where heat would be a factor but mine had started turning loose very quickly after I applied them. The tape seemed to hold quite well. There might be some issues with this but they weren't apparent before I installed the looms in the car.

Try contact cement on a non-cooperative label. Contact cement sometimes tends to get messy but it works.
I also use clear packing tape cut to 1.0 inch under the hood. So far so good.

This also works on original tags if you wind them in reverse.
