67 Grill paint questions
« on: June 02, 2016, 07:41:14 AM »
Hi
I'm in the process of painting my 67 mustang 390 San Jose grill and just need to know if the vertical supports and the "s" type bracket in the picture are to be argent colour or black?
Cheers

NPD has it in "rattle cans", but they are frequently out of it.

I'm guessing what NPD has that would be in the ballpark for a '67 is the '65 grille paint; that's the only color I can think of that is that blue/black color.  I ordered a can of NPD's "correct" '67 grille paint a few weeks ago, and it ended up being Ford Argent.
Too much junk, too little time.

I have put my original '67 grill in the paint shop for scanning the correct used color code.
If it would be convenient for some people I will post the color code?

Now that is scary. I waited several months until they had "the correct '67 Grill Paint" back in stock so I could get it. Of course their description is for the "correct metallic Blue". I already took it in March to our Colorado place (where my '67 is), but haven't done the grill yet. Obviously, when I get back there in a week or so, one of the first things I will do is try some from the can.
Thanks for the "heads up". I'll report back on what I find.

Please do with multiple (different lighting and angles) pictures to illustrate your findings.

Thanks

Thanks

First, before getting into my Reply, I should note that I had my Annual Eye Check-up in February, and I am not color blind, and in addition, at two weeks from turning 70, the only glasses I have are 1.75 Reading Glasses, and those only because my “35 sleeve length arms” aren’t long enough to read the small print.

That being said, here we go :

As drummingrocks felt that the 1967 Grill Paint that he had obtained from NPD looked like argent, I thought it would be a good idea to include “bar samples" of Argent along with the 1967 Grill Paint that I had finally gotten after waiting two months from NPD.
The first picture attached shows the paints I used. On the left, is Argent paint from Classic Auto Supply that I have used on my 1957 Thunderbird. I have compared it to some original Ford (not Motorcraft) Argent that I still have and the color is very good, but the Ford appears to have more metallic in it. In the middle is the 1967 Grill Paint, and on the right is Argent from NPD. Note that all are Seymour Paints, and most likely the two Argents are the same, but I have included both.
In the pictures that follow where all three “bar samples” are shown, the Classic Auto Supply Argent is always on the left, or on top, the 1967 Grill Paint in the middle, and the NPD Argent on the right, or bottom.
I think that it’s pretty obvious in the several pictures that I have included showing all three sample bars, that NPD’s 1967 Grill Paint isn’t even close to Argent. I think that either drummingrocks received a mislabeled can, or maybe it’s time for his Eye Check-up ??

The next nine pictures are of the 1967 Grill Paint sample bar only, in various positions and lighting (outdoor in shade, outdoor in sun, inside garage with ceiling fluorescent lighting and inside garage with the addition of a bench mounted fluorescent work light).

The final three pictures show the 1967 Grill Paint Sample Bar laid across my original grill, which as you can see, has most of the original paint missing.

In conclusion, I feel that NPD’s 1967 Mustang Grill Paint is very close to the original, based on the above. Also interesting is that this paint is very similar to the tutone Dark Gray Metallic Paint used on that Option (although I do not have a Grill Paint paint code to confirm that).

Hope this will be of help.

I agree, that looks really close.  I wonder if the guy who packed the box at NPD just grabbed the wrong can?  What I received was labeled "Ford Argent," so I assumed that's what NPD was selling as the correct '67 grille paint.  Good to know there is a usable alternative available!

As of 6:30PM last night (on June 20, 2016), NPD is still out of stock (for last 3-4 weeks anyways) I called and rep said when it shows available online, they have it. Till then, I wait.

Thanks for conducting a comparison test and posting the results.
