66 200 SIX clamp on valve cover
« on: May 15, 2016, 03:19:37 PM »
Good afternoon guys,

I'm asking about the clamp on top of the valve cover in a 6Cyl 200 that holds one of the heater hoses.
I've noted that some (or many) has it, but have also seen some others that hasn't. Was that particular from any assembly Plant or..? Thanks for your asnwers.

Great question, I am sure Jeff is going to chime in, but I will give my take. I believe that the Thermactor engines of 66, 6 cylinders, did not have the clamp. My air cleaner, which I know is original to my 66 6  cylinder thermactor CA build (6J is the air cleaner code on mine, consistent with my 18K potential build date), there are two extra hoses going to it. One on the passenger side, which routes around the back of the valve cover and to the anti back fire valve. A second one, from the valve cover oil cap, to the air cleaner snorkel.

That connection is why I believe the thermactor 66 , 6 cylinder cars do not have the clip, the routing of the heater hose would not work in that setup, mine just lays across the valve cover and then through the back of the choke cap, which from reading what I have found, Osborne manuals, etc, seems to be right.

I have attached a couple of pics, the thermactor does include a lot of stuff that normally isn't in the way on any other non Thermactor car.

I don't believe that there would be any other reason to not have that clip on the valve cover.

BTW, great looking engine bay you  have there!

jstefanick, many thanks for the cool explanation about the mentioned clamp..!
It catches my attention when looking at pictures of engines in 66 6Cyl 200 cars. I first thought that the clamp was in the non-San Jose plant cars due to the square bracket tab on radiators seen. But then I noted that there stays also in some of the pics that apparently are from cars made in SJ (rounded bracket tabs).
Yours is a good thought and maybe Jeff or another will put fresh air on it, but agree with you, that could be the way you say.
No stefanick, the picture I've posted is NOT from my car, that's from someone's car, and was just to show the clamp mine hasn't.
I have seen Thermactor placed (think always!) on the passengers side of the vehicle, and in your engine, there's nothing. Is your Thermactor placed on the drivers side..? Was that the common place..? Thought was on the oher side..!

Thanks again for your explanation.!

They are all on the drivers side on 6 cylinders, on the 8 cylinder, the air horn I know is on the passenger side, most likely along with the pump.

Look at the thread Jeff started about 1966 San Jose Thermactor cars 6 cylinder pics a few days ago. You will see them mounted on the drivers side.

Though, for interest sake, I do remember seeing some early engineering drawings, and I believe they may have been thinking of putting the 6 cyl thermactor over on the pass side at one point. (might have been in the Osborn book on the 66 Engine, at work cant look at it to verify.

"Drivers Side" can be a perspective that differs from one location on the planet to another.
LEFT side or RIGHT side is the assignment I grew up using in the parts world as "seen from being seated in the vehicle" This seems to be the universally accepted form of identifying what side of the vehicle is being discussed.

jstefanick,
I have noted were the 2 hoses in the air cleaner lid goes, fine. But when trying to find a new lid for my car, what I have found is that the "connectors" for these hoses in the lid are not opposite one from the other, like in the original lid.! Do you know someone with a "spare" Thermactor system LOL..!!!

Right Richard.! Yes, that's clear now, but for no confusion better refer to drivers/passenger side.!!  ;)

Can't find anything to disagree with that assumption at this point (not sure if I would trust the assembly manual on these details alone) Believe the mount and location of the pump took care of keeping the hose in place at this point Have a stack of Emission books - not sure fi there is anything in them other than drawings but will look

Be careful of those "internet pictures"   ::)

As far as the Thermactor system - have a little patience and you'll likely find one when you least expect it.

Restoration is not a sprint but a long distance race endeavor - trust me

Hi Jeff, looks like I finally have found a place that has a complete 66 200 SMOG System, at $950 completely restored ($550 unrestored). I don't know about prices, and even it looks to me expensive, it sure doesn't..! Plus shipping and customs... What do you think..?

IMHO and only my opinion that's allot of money. As we've discussed not allot of them around but not allot of potential buyers. Don't think your going to find allot of examples (examples of ones for sale or ones that sold) for comparison

But not my parts (to set the price) and not my money (to buy it)

Other than rebuilding the pump not sure what (restoring) would include other than stripping, cleaning and repainting. For $400. Especially considering you'll have to repaint many parts so that they look like they were painted on the engine as they were originally. If you purchase a set up ask for allot of good pictures especially of the "trees" or manifolds that attach to the heads. The nuts at the end often stick to the tubes when loosening them twisting and making a mess of the tubes when you remove them

Thanks for not mentioning how has it for sale or where. Not important to the discussion.

Yes, is a lot of money for me too.! Just wanted to know your opinion.
But also yes, not many around, so difficult decision.
I'm asking about all that's stuff, if I need extra parts, etc.. to fix it in my car. Let's see what I finally find, then will have to think about it and after all, decide.

It's from a reputed place so expect all the professionalism from them.!
