69 Back Up Lights ?
« on: April 30, 2016, 07:12:10 PM »
Before I proceed with tracking down a pair of NOS reverse lights for my car it might be good to find out what I have.  On the car now, and presumed assembly line are; on the left on the chrome bezel C7ZB-15A09-A and on the right C7ZB-15515-A.  The harness is a dual black wire with a red male female dual plug.  Grommet is part of the assembly.   Is this one original despite the C7 number ?  Are the 67, 68 and 69 the same fixture in appearence  and there fore interchangeable ? Thanks for any help.  Brian

Can't quite make out the part numbers on the wires. Are they "C9ZB"?

Brian,
I looked at the 69 Electrical Assembly Manual and Ford Car Parts (MPC), and it appears that 69 and 70 back-up lights are unique to those years, and not carried over from 67-68. No differences are indicated but who knows what the factory did.
From 69 Electrical - C9ZB-15500-B, RH, C9ZB-15501-B, LH, as assemblies.
From MPC  - the assembly above are made up of 15110 (gasket), 15511 (housing) and 15514 (lens). I assume the wiring is part of the housing (subassembly). For 69-70, a full assembly and the lens were serviced. For 67-68, no fully assembled light was serviced, just parts.
You can down load a copy of the MPC here - http://squarebirds.org/Manuals/1965/1965-72FordPartsTextCatalog/

Thanks Jim. Quite a chunk of info.  For 69-70 Ford did have a service, over the counter, part available and those numbers are; RIGHT  C9ZB-15501-B and LEFT 15501-B for the complete assembly.  Thanks guys that just might be an answer in record time ?  Brian

OK some good info. Thanks guys.  67-68 black plug and 69 red.  Lens depth change later in 69.  Did check out the library and that article is all about a re-body with some tips on R & R the internals.  I am going to poke around a bit for some service replacements just to see what they are costing ?  Seems the part numbers to look for are; C9ZZ-15500-E and 01-F in the FORD blue and white box.  This may be a good spot to illustate that both ends of the plugs are red for 69.  From the assembly to the harness/loom.  Brian

Brian - what you have there is the original back up light assemblies in your pictures.  The wiring harness is correct for sure and different from the 67/68 harness.  But the body is exactly the same and will have the C7 casting numbers.  There is a distinct left and right side as well.  Most of the Ford service replacements are wrong as the wire harness they used is not like the originals so you need to take everything apart and use the old wire harness like Jeff shows in the library.  And like Ed says the lense changed over during the year.  If I remember correct you had an early car (?) so you would just have a single thin reverse lense.

Well learned quite a bit over the week-end about the 69 back up lights on my car.   So...you must rebuild/restore your originals or re-body with an after market piece.  There are no other choice's ?  Most disturbing Marcus that the "Ford service replacements are wrong ".  Thanks for the alert and seems Ford had a knack for doing that with the reverse lights inparticular.  I am thinking the 65-66 grommets being to large.  Rebuilding the originals seems to be the route.  Right away I am thinking that the modern chrome is thicker than the assembly line stuff and will most likely present some difficulties.  Thanks,  Brian

Also during the transition period sometimes 3 thin lenses were stacked to make 1 thick one. I may have a couple of thin ones that were on the inside of the stack. They still look new as they were protected from the elements by the outside lens.

Yes - just use the reproduction or service replacements but they will not be like the originals

Most disturbing Marcus that the "Ford service replacements are wrong ".  ..............

Just one of a hundred or more parts for 69-70's that way. Front turn indicators are just one more example - Check Marcus' article in the Library  ;)
That IMHO is the reason one should ask the forum before they invest in expensive NOS parts that will become used service replacement parts once you bolt them to a car.

There's a lesson here - beware NOS, and verify.
