Desert cooler
« on: April 21, 2016, 09:22:33 AM »
I recently posted a question in the general discussion area about the radiator in a '66 GT i'm working on. I was told it may be something called a  'desert cooler'. Was wondering if any other members could enlighten me on this. There is a photo of said rad in the general discussion section, reply #9.
  Thanks again,  Pete.

Yes, it has C6ZE- E stamped in the side brace on the left side. That looks like my rad, only there is nothing stamped into the top tank. Was this a factory piece or dealer installed perhaps? Thanks for the help, you have answered a huge question. Looks like I should have this rad repaired.

Pete, it might be a good idea to take a few more pictures to share over here in this thread too. Keep in mind that the original radiator, even if it were originally a Dessert Cooler, it could have been re-cored or replaced. (like I mentioned in other thread). +50 years is a long time for many possibilities. Experts here can help verify before you shell out big money and later find out something is incorrect (e.g. the tanks). Just a friendly suggestion to get things verified before jumping the gun on getting the one you have gone through.

CCP  still looks like the right piece IMHO though can't explain the lack of the markings on the top tank. At the same time that tank is not something that a radiator shop would have made up or added to the radiator during the period if the radiator was being repaired. Think I mentioned earlier I believe this is the first manual desert cooler I can recall seeing

Couple of additional pictures or original examples for this discussion and those who will view it at a later date

Odd timing... just picked up a used radiator and trying to figure out its past and use.  It came off a '66 Metuchen A code GT auto car (got the 6Z B Autolite 4100 too!).

A search found this thread.

As with the one in the photo it has C6ZE F (looks like an F in the photo but the thread says E?) and has MC 10 C (or maybe G) 5 on a tag as in the photo.  The top of the tank is a bit dinged up and does not show any makers marks/stampings I can see, but it is "as found" and has not been cleaned up.  It is an Auto unit with the two cooling taps on the lower tank.

Interesting...My radiator is definitely a C6ZE E. I'm fairly certain now that this is the correct rad for my car, and am now looking for any input against using it. A few weeks ago I had never even heard of a 'desert cooler'.
In the few short weeks I have been a member of this forum, it has already been a tremendous help.
                        Thanks guys.

Hi,

On my cars for sale research, I found an add for a 66 GT Fastback:
https://www.geevers.nl/en/inventory/ford-mustang-fastback-gt-1808?m=3&t=&y=&c=&s=&cl=&sort=

I am wondering about the radiator. Is this a factory / dealer installed desert cooler? I would like to know more about desert cooler, any infos?

Thanks, Michael

For a dealer installed radiator, I would think it only fair to focus on what was available from Ford, and exclude any third party equipment.   In 1968 there were only three radiators available for 65/66 Mustangs, and they would all have been equipped with the built-in automatic transmission cooler.  The picture is from the general text section of the MPC.  I looked at the accessories section and see only a radiator bug screen, no radiator.  I also checked the performance section, and there are hi-performance water pumps but no radiators.

If you use the search you'll find a number of threads on the subject. I'm going to merge yours with one of those to keep things together

Interesting car, not to go off topic but that's now the 2nd NJ 'A' GT from that time period (around that VIN) I've seen with what appears to be no red oxide sealer on the floors.

Yes off subject - we can pick it up in a new one if someone wants to start one. Don't really see any surface of the floor were there is not body color overspray that has been cleaned off to tell what the base color was.
