Opinions on this 1965 Mustang GT 2+2
« on: April 19, 2016, 12:24:16 PM »
Hi,
Last weekend was held here in Mexico the most important classic annual show car of the country, the “Gran Concurso Internacional de la Elegancia Huixquilucan”…. There are usually great examples of many automobile makers…. So then, many Mustangs along the show…. There was one that specially draw my attention… it was a 1965 Mustang GT 2+2….. for me, it was the best Mustang showed on the event…. that doesn’t mean that it was ALL original … but gave me the impression that the owner wanted to replicate all details that were on the car as it came from the factory back then…. Tell me your impressions please…. I think is not as original as it could be, but I must recognize the great work done on this car, from the owner to the specialist shop that did the restoration job.
Please look at the details, I see several paint markings, on the engine, differential, etc. Does that paint markings are correct for this car? And what about the tags on the interior, specially the one of the sunvisor.... ???

Thanks for sharing, they are nice pics.. I think others will have much more to say than me but for starters i have never seen the "red' paint daubs on each shock tower before?? or the red "X" on the vacuum advance. Curious what others will find.

Two big items that know are incorrect are the gray distributor cap (should be black ), and the cast water neck on the intake. That should have been painted with the engine and also this variety looks to be from a later year as it has the provision for a temp sender or other accessory.

And the timing cover looks to be bare metal, that should have been black with the engine. Still, a nice looking car  ;) ;) ;)

looks like someone spent some time on this car but a few details are incorrect. the visor decal would be acceptable to me. i didn't see any undercarriage pics. however there are a number of items in the engine compartment that i would deduct for in mca judging. in no certain order....289 air cleaner decal incorrect.....missing checkerboards, red slashes on shock towers not needed, caution fan decal not needed, plug wire boots should be black, dist. cap should be black, inspection decals on cowl not needed, master cyl should be painted black, decal above heater motor not needed, thermostat housing & bypass hose should be black, coil decal should be on the coil not the bracket. original coils did not use a decal they were ink stamped, hood hinges look black should be phosphate & oil. not familiar with x-mark on vacuum advance. air cleaner snorkel attaching nuts are incorrect originals do not have dimples on the wing. pcv valve incorrect, looks like one of the choke fresh air tubes is missing, the outer nuts on the starter solenoid are too thick, i'm sure there is more that is not visible in the pics.

A minor technicality, your car is no longer referred to as a "2 + 2", it's a GT Fastback. There are no "2 + 2" emblems on the car.

Car has the push button seatbelts but no seat belt warning light that came with those on the dash.  Incorrect rally pac for deluxe interior.

The day/night mirror may be incorrect. As we discussed in another thread, the changeover from the rocker style to the twist style day/night mirror generally occurred around the time the interior decor group and GT option were introduced.

Well I'm reminded to always start with the basics especially with a 65 that has allot of options since so many get added.

Would have been nice to see a door tag, if it was original to have even more information.

With that said at least the car was built late enough to possibly be a factory GT with deluxe/pony interior

others have already spent some time providing a list of what they see. Real easy to mention something they have already listed.

Its our hope that this exercise is not seen as "tearing apart"  what appears to be a very nice car but instead educate and share some details.

Its not unusual to expect that some one out side of the country would lean heavily on magazines and pictures of other restored cars since original examples have to be pretty hard to come by - unless they are members here and benefiting from all of the members insights and knowledge

We see an example where (likely) another decal kit was purchased and pretty much every single one was used without confirming that they should be.

Will limit myself to five items that spring out that I don't think have been mentioned in addition to the whole decal thing

1- Thermostate housing is a later version

2- Drivers fender is a 66 or replacement fender

3- Master cylinder finish as has been discussed here.

4- Not sure where any of the paint marks came from

5- Not sure what they did around the VIN number but would really give that a good look from below and above.  Just looks interesting from what I see in the picture

I am certainly not an expert here, but are those inspection decals on the cowl correct?

As mentioned the owner must have purchased a kit so he got a pile of them and for some you have to put them somewhere if you bought them

Looking at the pictures I have of 65 Dearborn built cars from the spring of 65 Dearborn had started using some stickers in conjunction with the ink stamps for other inspections. Stamps used for things like electrical, body and final inspections seem to still use the ink style through April at least.

So I think that one of those is correct fro that general location - believe it really should be (looking at originals) more towards the drivers side but the rest would not have been placed on the cowl lip that year from what I can tell from what I've collected.

The terminal on the black/yellow wire at the starter solenoid doesn't look right to me. Seems to be too "blocky" - a modern replacement?

That's very cool! Thank you Workhose.... and thank you all for your opinions....it seems that most of the cars showed on this event are not truly as original as they should be....they're more esthetic than authentic.
