67 door speaker mounting
« on: April 15, 2016, 02:45:14 PM »
Exactly how were the speakers mounted to the door?  Were these specially made to accept screws from the outside....I can't figure out how exactly they were secured to the door.  The four original holes are there.  The speaker currently installed is not original, although the hole  pattern fits, it was just laying in the door(PO technology).

                                                                                                       Thanks...

I believe I saw a picture of an original speaker and it is thickened in the areas and threaded where the screws attach.  I'm sure no one reproduces the speaker in that manner?

It's called "captive nuts". These were on the original 1967 door speakers, as well as on their Service Replacements. These were crimped int the speaker frame, so that all you had to do was screw in the machine screw - no nuts or lock washers to deal with or drop. I've attached a picture of an NOS Service Replacement Speaker (zoom in to see the captive nuts). The only difference between the original and the Service Replacement, is the stamping on the Dust Shield. A picture of an original Dust Shield is also attached.

Hope this helps.

Bob - Dust Shield or Weather Shields?  :)

Not a big deal but have it more often referred to weather and makes more sense given the location

Jeff : "Weather" is probably more appropriate; I guess that I have always called them "Dust Shields" since the majority of originals that I have come across seem to exhibit more of a "dust issue" than weather issue. However, one of their main functions, IMO, is to keep water that runs between the Door Glass and Widow Seal from falling on and destroying the paper cone. Maybe the best words would be "Protective Shield". Interestingly, the Installation Instructions take the "cop out" approach, and just call them "Shields", noting to "install speaker with shield on top".

Are these 4X6 ovals?

                             -Keith

Keith : No, these are "nominal" 4 x 8 oval speakers. Actual mounting hole spacing, c to c, is 3" x 5-1/2".

This helps me a lot too since my originals are long gone. Thank You!

I still have my original "protective" shields and was curious how they originally mounted, having never paid any attention to them before when I tossed the original speakers (since the cones were junk, never knew that anyone could have re-coned them).

I see the screw in the center, presumably threaded into the steel in the center of the magnet. Maybe a #8? (maybe #10?)  with a serrated, external toothed lock washer. but I'm not sure how the plastic might be bonded to the metal frame of the speaker frame (nearer to the captive nut mounting screws) Possibly a form of two sided tape (maybe substitute urethane?)

Also, did anyone mention what the original size & type (finish) speaker mounting screws yet? I'll go to the assembly manual and check, maybe read earlier posts again.

Here is a picture of my current set up of the door speaker.
You can see the type of screws that they used on that car.
I have the deluxe interior, must that be important to know.
If you want some picture(s) of the original speakers, just ask.
I can post them tomorrow.
Kind regards,

The screw in the center that holds the shield on is a #10 - 32, pan head Phillips, with an external lock washer as you noted. I can't remember the length of that screw (my '67 speakers are all in Colorado with the car), but it's obviously very short. I actually "gambled" on my '66 speakers which I had reconed, and drilled a hole, using the drill press,  in the magnet in the same location as on the '67's, and then tapped it so that I could add the shields to them, as I think that was a good idea.  After doing so, I tried the speaker with the Tape Player, and it seemed to work just fine.
I have had 6 original '67 Speakers (not counting my NOS ones) with the shields, and all had a "hard" sealer between the shield and the Speaker frame, that was easily removed by sliding a razor blade knife between the shield and the frame. As you can see on the picture of the NOS one that I previously posted, no sealer is oozing out that can be seen, so it was a thin coat.

The mounting screws for 1967 are # 50937-S (Plain Finish), Phillips, Fillister Head, #8-32 x 5/8" long, Technically they were "Split SEMS" (had a lock washer as part of the machine screw), but I just used the Fillister Head Machine Screws with a separate Lock Washer.

Hope this helps.

A few more points in regard to the 1967 Door Speakers :

1) A further look into the 1967 Door Speakers in the 1960-68 MPC, shows that the mounting screws have an "S2" (Raven Black) finish.  Unfortunately, the Assembly Manuals tend to show an "S" finish (Plain) for virtually everything. I don't know whether or not they knew at the time the drawings were produced what the fastener finishes would be, or what, but I've found this to be the case on many occasions.

2) Another interesting thing from the 1960-68 MPC (specific page dated "April 1968), is that it shows that both the C6ZZ-18808-A Door Speakers (for 1966 AM-Tape Player) and the C7ZZ-18808-A Door Speakers (for 1967 AM-Tape and Hang-On Tape Player) were available. However, in the July 1968 OSI Catalog, it shows that the C7 was "Replaced by" the C6. I have known this for years, and of course it has helped me in procuring the two NOS C6 Speakers that I have for my '67. I have always thought that all Ford did was add the "captive nuts" and the "Protective Shield"  to the C6 Speakers. But, in looking at the 1966 Door Speaker mounting hardware, it calls out for Part # 50438-S13 screws. These are # 8-32, Phillips, Oval Head Machine Screws, 1" long and Chrome Plated (chrome because the heads show in the surface mounted Speaker Grills).  As no nuts are shown with the screws, this tells me that the 1966 Door Speakers must also have had the "captive nuts".  Then, the only difference must have been (?) the addition of the plastic "Protective Shield". This of course brings up another question - why then, wasn't the C6 Door Speaker "Replaced by" the C7, instead of vice versa ? The only thing that I can think of here, is that on all of the 6 original C7 Door Speakers that I have had, the speaker frames were either Zinc (or Cad) plated, and the NOS C6 Speakers I have are both painted Black. A "Cost Saving" issue possibly ?

3) Finally, as a matter of interest, both the Installation Instructions for the Hang-On Tape Player, and the 1960-68 MPC, note that "if car does not have moulding" (Lower Door Trim), Dealer is to "obtain from Service Stock". This agrees with what Bob Perkins had told me over 30 years ago when I asked him, knowing that I would someday be installing the 1967 Hang-On 8 Track that I had on my '67, what should be "correct" for the Door Speaker Grills. He noted that he had seen on cars without the Interior Décor Group, both ones with the Lower Door Trim added, as well as ones using 1966 surface mounted Speaker Grills. Now, having acquired the original Installation Instructions as well as the 1960-68 MPC over the years, I think it can safely be said that Ford's "intended method" was to add the Lower Door Trim for the Speakers. Based on Bob's observations, there were apparently some Dealers who either didn't have the Lower Door Trim in stock, or just elected (due to time and/or dollars) to use 1966 Speaker Grills (there were no separate Door Speaker Grills made for any 1967 Model).

I trust this has been informative. I believe it pretty well covers all that I can add in regard to the 1967 Door Speaker Mounting and Speakers.

Are we positive of phillips being the type of screws used to hold the weather shield to the magnet or was there possibly a running change/vendor change? Found these in a box of parts that I removed from a 1967 GT fastback way back in the 80's.
