65 GT Trunk floor drop off
« on: April 12, 2016, 11:25:03 AM »
Gentlemen,

I am in the process of restoring a 65 K GT. The trunk floor drop off's were changed with repo parts. My question is did the factory drop off have holes for the back up lights?
Thanks,

Larry

I think all the trunk floor drops off had the hole for back up light wiring, but it was plugged if the car didn't have the back up light option.

Hi Larry,

In 1965 back up lights were an option so I'd be leaning to say that the factory trunk floor drop-offs would not necessarily have holes for the back up lights wiring in 1965.  Backup lights became standard equipment in 1966.  I looked for a picture of my car (July 1965 Metuchen GT) and I do not have a good photo of that exact area.  Larry do you have a photo of the exact area you are looking at so I can look to see for a comparison?

Regards,

Ron

Guys thanks for the replays,

I don't have access now, will try to send some pictures tomorrow.

Looking from the underside, the drop off piece is part of the trunk floor that comes down and attaches to the lower quarter panel.

I am thinking that it should have the holes available for wiring since it was an option for 65. I don't think they would make a special trunk floor just for the GT.

Probably making a mountain out of a mole hill. Just wanted to get it right the first time.

Thanks

Larry,
No back up lights, no holes, at least for a San Jose May 65 GT Fastback.
(Sorry, I had to toss in a picture.)

The holes were drilled with a hole saw if it had backup lights.

I think those holes are standard on all cars. My hole for the backup lights are higher up.

This is what I've seen as well, at least on an early Metuchen '65.  It didn't have backup lights, and the holes were there but were plugged with rubber grommets.
Too much junk, too little time.

Brian,

Thanks for the pictures. I believe all 65 and 66's have that large rubber plug. Does yours have another hole above and toward the back for the back up light wiring?

I believe the large hole that is plugged, 377678-S, is an alignment hole for the rear quarters.
The holes were drilled with a hole saw if it had backup lights.
Looking at the clearances, the hole would have to be made either before the panel was installed or before the gas tank (and suspension) was installed. I think a drill might have the possibility of going thru the rear quarter, so a hole saw would be a better choice. The 65 Electrical does not indicate method, only an approximate location with the cable.
If the hole for the backup lights were going to be made today, I would put a piece of 1/2 to 3/4 inch plywood between the drop-off panel and quarter panel to "protect" the panel.

Hole was likely IMHO added during the bucking process - reason its called out on buck tags (at those plants) ot noted on the radiator support. Location varies slightly since these were done by hand

On my 4500 mile Aug 64 Dearborn car, the cutout hole centers are still inside the quarters and are painted/ primed.

Thanks Mike - that really helps us place the modification to a specific time at Dearborn
