1968 AM Radio
« on: June 13, 2010, 10:39:46 PM »
Some help please..

I am restoring a Dearborn built, June 1968 convertible which came with AM radio and floor console.
I have been searching for the radio knobs but have run into some confusion with radios.

The radio in my car has "Ford" written on the screen and has chrome push buttons.
Many of the 68' radios shown on Ebay etc have "Philco" written on the screen and black push buttons.

I have searched 68 mustang interior pictures on the internet and both radios seam to be fitted to the 68' is this correct??

As mentioned I am looking for the correct knobs (with floor console), but I first need to confirm the correct radio.
Are the knobs for the chrome push button radios the same as the knobs for the black push button radios?

Appreciate the help.

Regards

The knobs for chrome buttton radios would not be correct for 68s because 68s only used black button radios. Only 2 kinds of knobs, with console or without

This is where I got confused to start with.

As mentioned I have searched various websites and publications (e.g. Mustang Recognition Guide 1965-1973 - by Dobbs, Farr, Healsey, Kopec).
This clearly shows pictures of the radio with chrome push buttons for 68'.

Various car sales web sites showing 68' cars for sale show chrome or black push buttons for the radios.

Could it be that 68 had chrome and switched to black during production cycle?

First of all recognition guides are suspect at best. Second pictures from 68 model year ads are most often press cars and are converted 67s or very early cars that never went into production. Another thing to consider is did the dealer put in the radio? 67 radio kit fits perfectly in 68. I'll say it again....chrome button 67, black button 68

Tim is correct. 67 used the chrome pre-select push knobs and 68 used the black plastic pre-select knobs. It was a change over by Ford just like the console change was.

While the guides and even some owner say theirs came with chrome knobs, I have yet to see any original 68s with the chrome knobs.

They say a picture is worth a thousand word, so here are two thousands words of pictures.
Attached are pictures of a 1968 radio I bought in 1968 for my radio delete 68CJ.

+1 to Tlea's description.  Here's a photo of my 68 with the trim in place.
