Topic: GT Exhaust Trumpets

The chrome on my original Trumpets is pretty flawless, however the pipes have deteriorated and I would like to get some new ones made and welded in place. I have looked around and didn't find any post on this subject and I searched for a source online. Does anyone know of a source? I can get them made (I assume) but I need to know the dimensions of the bends ect. Any suggestions?

They are made from stainless steel and you might be able to polish them back to a decent finish. Reproductions are available in SST but the louvers in the tips are too close to the end on some. The louvers need to be recessed about 3/4 inch.

Jim,
The actual trumpets are in great shape, its the steel tail pipe that is rotted away, one is totally spent and the other is still intact so I should be able to get a muffler shop to bend me up some new ones. Did find one shop after I posted that is only a few miles away, so I will stop by and see if they can fashion me up a few. I actually found another set on e-bay for 60 bucks that already had some oversized pipes welded to them. I figure I can practice on those first.
I was just wondering if anyone had a path to restoring the originals before I get started cutting and welding.

Your budget is $85 (plus shipping) which, by a strange coincidence, is the price a pair of concourse grade, pre-bent, reproduction tips cost from NPD.

As with a lot of parts I know there are suitable replacements out there and it may be more  financially better to just order them, but I would like to try and salvage as much as possible. I did get the practice pair today and I was a bit miffed that they appear to be reproductions. I couldn't tell much from the pictures, but the guy said they were original off a resto he just finished. He admitted that 2" pipes were welded on but I was willing to work with that since I was just going to take them off. Is there any chance that there may have been two styles or more depending on the build site? If not which one looks to be the original? Thanks again in advance.

My point was to get a set of reproductions, cut off the tips and weld your tips to the brand new, pre-bent pipes.

Only one "style" for all 65-66 GT exhausts. The Ford part numbers are stamped into the metal at the expansion to slip over the 1 3/4 pipe from the resonator. Original tips, or very good reproduction have the louvers recessed 3/4 inch, bad reproductions are recessed about 1/2 inch. You can't see the louvers in your pictures.

A good exhaust shop can bend a piece of pipe and weld to the stainless trumpet. That's what I did with mine. Even though your original pipes are rusted, they should retain enough shape that a good shop can figure out the rest.

My car is still in winter hibernation but if my memory is correct, the top tip in the picture is original, bottom is repo. Difference in the outer ring is obvious when side by side.

That is a great idea, didn't think of that. I will look at purchasing a set of repos just to for the pipe.

As for your observations, the top one is the original and the other is the one that was sold as an original.
Still no response from the seller, so time to get E-bay involved, that will ferret him out I am sure.

I don't have the link, but below is the description.
They have not responded to the 2 msg. I have sent, I'll give them a few more hours and I'll notify E-Bay that I want to return them.
I might be willing to work with them because I was just going to use them as a test pair, but if they are going to hide I wont.
I know I can fix them up and sell them to some local guys that aren't concerned with originality, but I am getting tired of the "Hipo", "GT", B.S. that these people are baiting with.

"1965 1966 OEM Original Mustang GT Exhaust Tips (Trumpets)

These were off a GT Fastback that had new 2" exhaust outlet pipes welded to them on that car due to the exhaust having been redone. I sold the car with a new reproduction set of tips put on it after restoration and have these left over from it.

The middle vent/louvere could be flattened out a tiny bit on one of them (see photo of louveres in the right side photo). I haven't done it but it's easy to do. I didn't want to alter the original used finish in any way and am leaving that up to the buyer in case that look is desired for your daily driver vs. a polished non-aged finish etc. My wife has an old VW that is all original and would never consider polishing out the weathered chrome to be too shiny - she'd kill me

These tips are of the high quality, very durable/strong stainless steel as used for all the original OEM GT exhaust tips which have literally stood the test of time.

They are in good shape for their age and are ready for cleaning and fresh polish... or not.

It's fun to have original parts - it just feels better to most folks (understandaby not all though).
