1965 mustang alternator question....anyone know?
« on: March 31, 2016, 12:09:11 AM »
Hello all...

Can anyone tell me why my mustang's alternator would have a two place pulley?  Any info is much appreciated.  Thanks in advance...

That's usually an indication that the alternator was rebuilt.

Could be a number of reasons. Application is one - some years and applications used dual pulleys so it could be from another car, like Jim wrote it could be due to a rebuild and the service just using something that would work with more application. Must be a couple of other reasons that just don't come to mind this moment

My guess is that it was replaced at some point.  Back in the 80's I went to the local auto supply to buy a replacement alternator for a daily driver 65 Mustang with a 289.  The original alternator had a single grove pulley.  The guy plunked down a rebuilt alternator on the counter with a pulley that had 2 grooves.  I said what gives?  The original had a single groove pulley?  He relied, "don't worry, it'll fit".  I went home, installed it and it worked fine.  I just replaced that alternator with the correct one about a year ago.
