1970 Mach 1 Spoilers
« on: March 30, 2016, 08:27:40 AM »
I have seen a lot of information about the front and rear spoilers for the 69 Mach but not much in the way of the 70 Mach 1's. I bought my car with a lot of pieces missing to include almost every panel and options, My 70 Mach 1 was built at the Metuchen in September 69, with a 351W & a 4 Speed. Can anyone tell me if the 70 Mach's built at Metuchen came with the front or rear spoilers?

I have a 69 Mach 1 with a used 70 rear spoiler I installed circa 1982.
It's fiberglass and heavier than the plastic 69 spoiler which was notorious for sagging.
There's a prop rod to hold the trunk lid up, but the lid has always stayed up fine on my car without it.
There are also oval cutouts in the trunk bracing for the spoiler mounting brackets.
69 trunk lids lack these cutouts so the spoiler was simply thru bolted.
I see a lot of 70 mustangs with rear spoilers on eBay lacking the mounting brackets which is a shame since when utilized, they make drilling the holes goof proof.
If you need pics, I can search my backup drive and take some pics of my car.
Since I own a 69, I'm not going to speak to the 70 chin spoiler.
I should also mention you could get the rear spoiler on a 70 sportsroof regardless of what factory built the car.
The rear spoiler would be on a Marti report for your car if it was originally so equipped.

Believe a 70 NJ Mach I could come from the factory with the rear spoiler/wing if it was ordered and paid extra for.

Not certain of the front spoiler on that same model. Know we see allot of things out there that isn't correct hopefully some guys that focus on the 70 model will share their knowledge and set the record straight for you ;)

The front spoiler is listed as a dealer installed accessory in the brochure.

Here's what the 70 brochure states.
Front Spoiler -  standard on Boss 302, is available as a dealer-installed accessory on other models. It improves steering and stability at higher speeds.

The rear spoiler and slats are also mentioned in the brochure.

Functional rear spoiler improves rear end stability (Sportsroof), Sport Slats add a racy look to the rear end of your Sportsroof and direct sunlight and precipitation off backlite glass for better rearward vision.

Rear Spoiler was a factory available option and will show up on the Marti report as such ("Rear Deck Spoiler") It was a $20.00 option ($15.78 dealer cost)

The front spoiler was standard on the Boss 302/Boss 429 (2 different parts) , and was only available as a dealer installed (NOT factory) option on any of the other 1970's ...

I think every 69/70 Mach1 in the world got a front spoiler at some point though...

Heres a strange senario. I've owned my 70 Mach1 since 9/73. It had louvers which are on the invoice but no spoiler. In 1982 I found a set of spoiler brackets under the trunk mat. So that year I ordered a NOS spoiler and added it. The assembly line worker must have anticipated adding a spoiler and threw a set of brackets in the trunk, but then looked at the build sheet and saw that the order didn't call for one. Just my guess. Spoilers front and rear and antennas were added at the dealer. I worked at a Ford dealer in 69&70 and knew the guys that did accessory installs and saw them install spoilers and other dealer installed options on many cars.

I worked at a Lincoln-Mercury dealer from 70-72 and I don't remember installing any rear spoilers but I installed several front spoilers on Eliminators. They came in the trunk with the antennas. I would think the Mustangs would be the same since they would drag loading and unloading on the trucks.

I agree, and I've heard many times over the years that the spoiler and antenna were in the trunk for the dealer to install, but I haven't heard or read about the wing, brackets and prop rod pieces being in there too.
Not much room with the spare in there.
