Early Fender to Bumper Brackets
« on: March 28, 2016, 09:29:49 AM »
Hey All,

I picked up a pair of bumper brackets (fender to bumper) for use on my April 1964 Dearborn Coupe. One is dipped in black paint with  part number C5ZZ-17A869-A on a "Service Parts" sticker. The other is bare metal, part number C5ZZ-17A870-A on the older "FoMoCo"tag.

They are mirror images of each other, as you would expect, EXCEPT for one detail. Look at the pictures below, and you will see that the black (later) service part kicks out about 1/8 inch where it would mount on the fender, while the older issued part does not.

   So...

   A) Is this yet another 64 1/2 deal, where early cars had the flat style, and later on they decided that kicking it away from the body is a better idea? Or some other explaination? (Vendor, Plant, etc.)

  B) What would be the correct assembly line finish on these parts?

  C) Which version would be correct for my car?

Yup, I remember the "kick-out" but I don't remember the straight version. Does either have a date code? I painted mine semi-gloss black when I cleaned them up.

Thanks for the responses, and pictures. No date codes, but the flat one has the very early FoMoCo tag. I no longer have my originals as they were destroyed during disassembly over 30 years ago. Very puzzling.

Not sure if this helps, but I have seen 'R' and 'L' stampings on originals.

No stampings, but these are not assembly line parts, they are over the counter.

If it was me, I would go with the ones on the left.  The Natural colored ones look more like assembly line parts,  The Black painted ones look more like over the counter Service Replacement Parts.. But that's just me.

They were originally black from the assembly line.  From what I have seen, the natural ones are the last service replacements from Ford.
