Correct style fender bolts - Sept 68 NJ
« on: March 26, 2016, 04:43:52 PM »
I'd like to re-visit this post and ask the same question.  This time perhaps, with more members, might get a wider responce ?  My September 1968 Metuchen 69 Mach 1 car has no Fender bolts with the ' N ' logo, has two bolts with the ' T '  and several with the 3 small squares.  The rest are the ' anchor ' version.  I am counting 12 bolts at the fenders and another five on the radiator support wall.  Those five are; one at each fender apron to radiator support these are the ' T ' bolts, two for the hood latch and one at the oil cooler upper bracket.  Total of 17 bolts.  The Metuchen assembly line  logo and finish for these bolts ?  Thanks,  Brian

Brian since we're/your asking about bolts over a year eariler than the original post I.m going to split the topic so we can focus on the new question and cut down on the possible confusion ;)

The "T" is the symbol for a Grade 5.1 bolt. Sometime in the late 60's, the markings for Grade 5 bolts was changed. The old style was three "bars" equally spaced at 120 degrees on the head. The newer style had an inverted "T" normally used to indicate a size smaller than 3/8 inch diameter and with a new set of strength criteria. Larger than 3/8 kept the old style and its own criteria. There was some overlap in the size vs grade. All you need to know is that it exists and it means Grade 5.1. The vendor marking appeared in the center of the "T", or on top (bottom) of Grade 5.1, and in the center of the old Grade 5.
All the other grades stayed the same.

The "T" is grade 5.1 as you stated - it is distinct from grade 5. The "T" was only used on SEMS (screw and washer assemblies). Grade 5 did not change, it had and still has the 3 x 30 degree hash marks.

You are correct about the 5 and 5.1 standards as they exist today. In the late 60's, early 70's time period, the standards were different.

I purchased from the original family an October 31, 1968 built 9T01H128028. The top of the fenders have "T" on the head of the bolts, and the verticle fender bolts that anchor to the radiator support have an N on the head of the bolts.

Jeff's picture and Sean seem to agree on the ' T ' bolt on the fender tops ?  Sean did not mention what bolt he has on the shock towers ?  No agreement on the firewall bolts so it's not looking good so far.  My car seems to have an assortment with no way to verify ?  Maybe some more replies/observations ?  Is the ' T ' Grade 5.1 bolt factory installed ?   Brian

Any help with what the correct finish would be for the fender bolts ?  Yellow Dichromate, Black Phosphate, Bright Zinc or other ?  Thanks,  Brian

Believe from the ones I've seen bright/clear/silver zinc (what ever your local platter chooses to call it seems to be the practice

The fender bolts I think are actually a cadmium finish.  I just had 100 of them redone and they came out great.  Slightly different look than the zinc finish.

So are we talking two entirely different colors here.  Bright/clear/silver zinc vs Cadmium.  I assume cadmium is a gold color ?  Marcus do you have any input for the correct  bolt head logo for a East Coast car ?  Thanks, Brian
