Glove box latch identification
« on: March 09, 2016, 01:34:06 AM »
Has there been any discussion on the different glove box latches for 65-66?  I tried searching the forum but couldn't come up with anything.  From looking through my collection (which are unfortunately at this point loose and not tagged as to what plant, date, or interior type they were pulled from) I can come up with four distinct versions of the non-locking latches.  There are three versions according to the engineering numbers in the April '66 Master Cross Reference, and only one service number in the MPC's i've seen.  I can make an educated guess as to the progression of the latches, but maybe this issue has already been put to bed?  I can post some pictures if it would help.

thanks,
garrett

Don't know if anyone has done a survey of the subject of the latch know there has been some threads related to the catch. Not sure of the differences or if there are visible with the latch installed in the glove box door but will to check and post if you want to give it a try

Can guess that I've not taken the to focus on this detail or have a bunch of supporting pictures - guessing my best chance is in the pictures of the glove box tire pressure decal location picture file

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this, but here are pictures of different original 65-66 glove box latches.
The following are my assumptions, if anyone can confirm or correct what I've come up with, I'm all ears.

The first picture shows from left to right:

1. first version of '65 concave glove box latch (short 1/2" button with early pawl/spring)
2. first version of '65-66 flat glove box latch (longer 11/16" button with early pawl/spring, perhaps applies to 65 deluxe interior only)
3. second version of '65 concave glove box latch (short 1/2" button with 2nd pawl/spring design)
4. second version of '65-66 flat glove box latch (longer 11/16" button with 2nd pawl/spring design, late '65 GT & all of '66)
5. May not be Mustang (i'm not sure), it has a 13/16" long button with 2nd pawl/spring design

Second picture is a view from the right.

Third picture shows the early (left) and later (right) pawl/spring designs side by side

Fourth picture shows the reproduction '65 concave glove box latch is actually closer to the C2DZ-6406072-A 60-63 Falcon glove box latch (7/16" button length with short stainless cap).

Any thoughts?  Does anyone find side by side comparisons like this useful?

thanks,
garrett

C5ZB-6506072 original factory for 1965 Mustangs, ref AM0006 page 16 (same page as above).
C5AB-6306072 original factory for 1966 Mustangs, ref Am0011 page 14.
C5ZZ-65072-A service replacement for 1965 Mustang, may be for 1964, ref Ford Car Parts, section body 47 page 11.
C5AZ-6306072-A service replacement for 1965 and 66 Mustang, ref Ford Car Parts, section body 47 page 11.

Can you match part number to picture? Keep in mind: different suppliers; different assembly plants; running changes - all nice "quirks" to keep you (off balance and) busy.
