Thermo Fan Clutch Replacment
« on: March 05, 2016, 05:01:47 PM »
Current thermo fan clutch on my 1966, 289, San Jose mustang needs to be replaced. Current one installed is marked E-C60E-G, but after some research looks like proper one should be C6ZE-A. Car was built December 1965. I can not find anyone who has a replacement. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Watch ebay and buy usable one or send it out to be rebuilt if not. Rebuild service is about 250.00 + or - . No one I am aware specializes in keeping stock on ones like you are wanting. The ones that are reproduced are for the big blocks .

According to the 75 edition of Ford Car Parts, you got the correct clutch, C6OE-G. Ones identified as C6ZE-A are for a 2 1/4 inch radiator core. I don't know where you are located, but a quick look on Yahoo search turned up many rebuilding facilities.

Thanks for the help. I wasn't aware the fan clutch could be rebuilt. I'll look into this.

Just for my sake I thought it may help it I gave a little more detail on my car for correct setup advice on the cooling system. It's a 1966, built in San Jose in December 1965. DSO was Los Angeles. So I presume it would have had the original thermactor smog setup which is no longer installed. In any event, when searching through multiple forums and sites today I came across a post which stated a car of my details would have had a C6ZE-A fan and thermo fan clutch. My current fan is a C60E-G and the clutch is marked E-C60E-G. From what I can tell both physical fans are 7 blades but the C6ZE-A fan blades are slightly larger and shaped a bit different, see images. Would one fan draw more air than the other? Not sure how crazy I should get with picking the right one. Currently I'm dealing with a cooling problem so if I was going to fix or replace my current thermo fan clutch, I was wondering if I should be installing the proper fan/clutch setup. In addition, I'm considering replacing the radiator as well. It is a stock radiator, but I suspect it was replaced at one time. It is a 3 core radiator and I presume the original was 2 core.

The reason for all of the above is because I'm dealing with an overheating problem after driving the car and it is at idle during a stop. Runs fine while driving but overheats at idle and when I turn her off. I replaced the hoses, water pump, radiator cap, thermostat and coolant, which hasn't helped. I did notice last season the fan clutch was leaking a fluid so I presume it is worn out and needs replacing.

Any additional guidance would be helpful.

Thanks

I think your "G" fan is correct.
