original '67 289 radiator with a/c
« on: March 02, 2016, 10:11:27 PM »
Are the outside dimensions the same for a non a/c radiator as with a/c....and is the a/c radiator 3 row, rather than 2?

The radiators I have seen on cars with factory AC have a 24" core like the big block cars, with the difference being the lower inlet being on the right instead of the left side of the core.

No the 289 non A/C radiator is smaller then the heavy duty cooling radiator used on a 289 A/C equipped car. The HD radiator is wider. It is also different in appearance compared to a bigblock radiator .

I have a 67 with ac. I looked it up a while ago as it seems to be a mostly original car except for the engine. I was focused on the filler panels for the radiator support opening and they appeared to be all the same. For some reason mine did not match up. After speaking with my old time radiator shop. He told me some one installed a Fairlane radiator which was about 1 inch taller but the same width. I can measure my radiator this  weekend for the width.

+1

A/C cars with STANDARD cooling did not use the larger radiator (20 inch wide, 2 rows) They simply all had the shroud & fan clutch.
My example had the standard cooling AND Select-Aire. It was a 20 inch wide 2-row radiator. I cannot understand WHY, because the car was sold new in Barstow California, right in the middle of the Majave Dessert!

Interesting for Barstow.  I have only seen a few factory AC cars, and the ones I recall had the 24" core. Hence my comment; However that is interesting that Ford wasn't consistent regardless of the market it was sold in. Barstow is hell, even vehicles that don't have issues struggle in Barstow at times.
I used to do the Baker-Vegas run and it's hell on humans too.

From my learnings, 1967 with 289 engines received 20 inch bolt in radiators. They may have been 2 and 3 core.

1967 with 390 received 22 inch radiators, and those were not bolted in directly. They used a pair of lower saddles and an upper bracket, similar to those found on 24 inch radiators starting in 1968.

Seems this might be off of accuracy, that is if intended to say that all 289's ONLY received the 20 inch radiator. I cannot check sources right now but there ought to be a 22? inch one for the 289's also.

Additionally, I have only ever noticed "original example" 20 inch wide radiators with just the 2-rows... but I know I have had my 20" radiator converted to 3-row, done by Modine in the mid-80's so I'm fairly sure original tanks & straps versions can have 3-rows in them now.

The MPC, because of the understandable "a few sizes fits all" service mentality, is woefully inadequate in regards to identifying what specific radiators came from the factory.

However, it does specify three things:

1. 200 = 20-1/4" core width
2. 289 = 20-1/4" core width
3. 390 = 23-1/4" core width

If you look at radiator specifications from Modine and several other suppliers, It shows them to be 20 and 24. I would imagine Ford sizes are core size, less the brackets.

The 67 FE Mustang/Cougar core is narrower then the 68/70 FE core . The 67 FE radiator was one year only. The 67 FE fan shroud  will only fit the narrower 67 FE radiator . The 68-70 FE radiator uses a different wider fan shroud . The 68-70 FE radiator evolved into a wider ,larger, better cooling radiator. The radiator providers typically don't carry the narrower 67 FE less efficient style radiator because most people what the most cooling alternative and the vendors want to optimize inventory  .

Bob,
I ran into an issue because the 1967 bottom tank wasn't available anymore. That likely explains why.
