Low mount alternator

In this pic of a 12000 mile Dearborn Scode, from the "67 390 air filter housing" thread, it shows a low mount alt.
Was this common? I had always thought it required smog equipment to have low mount,if no smog, then high mount automatically.

I had always thought that my low mount was incorrect .... and it probably is.

If memory serves me correctly, it has to do with the AC.

Low mount has to do with thermactor, the air pump was mounted on the top alternator below. What is the DSO of the car. Big block cars sold in California had thermactor.

+1 Low mounted alternators are usually associated with the thermactor pump...

Looks to be an early car too, as it doesn't have the "Powered by Ford" chrome valve covers

Looks like the car was sold in Michigan.

I would venture to say based on the information that it is more likely the emission style alternator bracket was changed sometime in the past (after factory) then the less likely notion (because of or lack of evidence)  that it was original to the car. Just my thoughts .

Very nice car with a lot of original assemblyline parts but not untouched . Evidence of a repaint and other things changed or detailed under the hood just to name a few things seen in pictures not to mention lack of other BB emission equipment call into question if a out of the ordinary part is original or not. Not to say it couldn't happen but more unlikely then not IMO. This one out of place part does not diminish the car from being very nice.

I have a California car with no Thermactor emissions.

That can be explained by the fact that 67 Shelbys cars were built typically on speculation and less typically to special order.  Other examples lead us to the conclusion that SA wasn't too careful on whether a thermactor  equipped car went to a emission state or a inboard equipped car went to a state with minimum distance between headlight law state.  If the engine code in your 67 Shelby GT500 VIN is 402(4 speed with thermactor but no A/C ) or 403 (4 speed with air and with thermactor) and you don't have thermactor equipment then some one took it off in the past most likely. If your engine code is 400 and delivered in the state of CA then it is most likely a less then concerned shipping to the dealer to get cars sold scenario like I mentioned previously . That is a far cry from a smog part on a non smog car.

Bob, Very perceptive. It's 400. I don't know if I should ask this elsewhere, but would that make the 400 engine sticker correct as well?

Looks like its likely a PO modification. Low mileage does not always equal untouch. As offered already plenty of evidence that someone has been in that engine compartment doing plenty of things

Unfortunately you can't often take everything your see at face value

It is a real nice car, I'm sure I could overlook a coupla flaws if I could buy it.
I now have the correct brackets to high mount mine.
