1967 Mustang 390 steering column shaft finish.

What would be the original finish on a the steering column shaft? Look to have been P&O.

I think it's forged steel so it would be a dark natural finish. To clean it up, a dark phosphate finish would be my choice.

Thanks, gentlemen. I used the 390 reference so others would know it was a two piece '67 column. It had been spray painted initially.
