Slop? Overspray? Something else? July 64 Dearborn
« on: February 16, 2016, 07:51:07 PM »
The easy way would be to not obsess so much over part of the car that 90% wont even appreciate...which is why im writing to the other 10%. I have an area that i was trying to get a decent detail picture of how the car was painted. I am trying to see if what i have pictured is 'slop' or overspray or something else.

slop argument....My understanding is the slop paint is a heinz 57 mixture of stuff. this sure looks like a mix of stuff...

overspray argument...the car is a wimbledon white car (dearborn july 64). all of the original cars ive seen, as well as other tips and info read, states the undercarriage will have paint overspray that could extend to this area of the car. this could surely be a good dusting of white over the original undercarriage color

'OTHER' argument... i got the car very much unrestored in the early 90s. its last registration was in 1979 from the state records i was able to get..but in those first 15 years of driving around.. anything couldve happened... and hell for the rest of the time it sat in the unknown of the 80s, anything else couldve happened.

what are y'alls thoughts?

Jeff, does the paint look original or in your eyes could it have had a respray before you took ownership?
Always hard to tell in pictures, the black painted underneath looks original in my eyes, not sure about the white overspray, perhaps wait for Jeff or Charles to chime in.

Best I can tell its original. When I cleaned an area under the trans, it had some of the same.. Just more in the rear end

Pick a couple of these areas or better one, and with a rag take some light polish or wax product with a polish and buff a small area. Allot of what your showing has overspray (from a later paint job possibly) over the color/product below

This will give you a better look at the single bottom coat - what your looking for. It appears from these pictures that you have a really dark gray almost black finish. Also helps to hold up IMHO a freshly sprayed example of black right next to the floor pan. This often really shows the difference because of the comparison.  Did this in an earlier 65 San Jose fastback floor example. Side by side you could see that the floor was gray not black like it appeared in pictures of just the floor.

Jeff.  It's funny you say that because after I took the pictures I took three cards that were shot with two different types of black - semi-gloss, a semi-flat, and a charcoal gray/black from the interior.    They should all be dry today, and I will do that exact suggestion. Thank you

The white paint speckling is not unusual either.  We see cars with a lot of body color over-spray and some with hardly any.

was able to get a couple pictures, though when relying on flash lighting and work lights, you dont get an accurate representation imho

below is the area - post wax/cleaner wipe down. next to a paint chip of a semi gloss black

Did you find any red oxide visible?

My car was built a few months after yours, same plant. I have found no visible red oxide. I feel I'm going to be ex-communictaed from the church of concourse mustang if I finish my restoration with none visible.

FWIW, what I could uncover about mine, it looked just like yours. Near as I can tell, which is hard with all the white over it, the bottom was actually black. I guess it could be slop, whichever it is, once the white overspray is on it, I'm not sure if it will matter much.

Here was my first shot at reproducing what I saw on mine. I'm redoing as some of this white was just too dry.

i saw zero red oxide under my car (except for what I may have shot with some rattlecan primer touching up some spots).

Yes often difficult to get a close representation. Always have to take a ton of pictures, changing angles, and light source locations some times helps

How do they compare to you since your the only one there?  :)

Jeff - to me it is more semi gloss than anything else.

the hardest thing i am trying to get through my head is as such - when i first began the car in the early 90s i would say the consensus in the hobby was a more satin DDL9423 for everything undercarriage related. i know we learn more and the hobby progresses, and we should always use what we find on our individual cars as a rule and guide. i dont want to be 'that guy' at the shows that has to explain off every difference his car has from the others. i learned a ton from you and charles when i was going for my gold card in 2007 and have always trusted your insight into the hobby.

then again, its been a while since ive been to a MCA show, and i could be totally wrong. i plan on attending one in arpil.

i am going with a semi-gloss black with a touch of dark gray in the mix as my option as it looks like a majority of the base - especially in the transmission hump.

oh - and i moved the car outside yesterday - using sunlight and other lights to match it up - was able to clean off a couple more areas... i just hope the work pays off in the final product.

as i mentioned earlier - i had no red oxide originally visible underneath. i also, through sanding, have not seen any under the layers of history.

was your car having that much body overspray? it looks like it goes about everywhere
