I have seen the outside half ether plated zinc silver or painted silver. the method seems to be intermix in the timeline. I have found NOS service ones to be the same inner mixed of coatings.  Inner half was bare cast iron.

After all these years its often difficult to find any finish (other than surface rust) on the calipers on most cars and of course (until Marti reports) it was near impossible to determine if a car was originally equipped with style steel wheels. All of this can blur the lines and findings.

On my car, described as you have, I would return the finish to the outer "half" and move on to the next rewarding task

Attached are two pictures of the rotors and calipers on my 67 Metuchen fastback - one with flash and one without.  The calipers are as they were when the car was parked in a field sometime in the 70s.  The black-out is no longer there but you can see where it was.

My 1967 Shelby was bright on the outside half and as-cast on the inner half. I just completed them. Zinc outer, cast inner.
My crossover line is stainless.

....... My crossover line is stainless.

Were you able to get those to seal up completely?

For others viewing this thread - stainless was not the original material used for these ;)

Jeff,
Yes, I did get the stainless line to seal. The fittings are the same, I just won't have to be concerned with the tubes discoloring rapidly. The quality of the galvanization these days is piss poor, and just sitting in the garage the new ones discolored badly. I elected to use stainless because they can be seen.
