Topic: Painting a 65 toploader

I'm trying to get the correct paint for my toploader. What do you all use?

+1  There are guys that use paint though regular paint often will get chipped or scraped trying to put the unit in the car leading to more work and touch up

A light layer of oil is present over an otherwise medium-dark exterior. This oil is residual from casting and assembly. It's best function is to reduce rust.

that one does not have the correct appearance to be concours. looks like the entire unit was painted with one of those cast iron type paints. the top should be bare steel. there are a few machined areas that should be brighter that the case itself. others will chime in with more details.

+1. Everything the same shade is not what you want . There are many rust inhibitors ( T9 is just one) that will keep the rust away plus allowing it to look more authentic.

Not the same application (and don't copy the paint marks please)  but IMHO a driver quality attempt.





Again not your specific application but from a Thoroughbred job a while back. Input retainer still needs to be finished as well of a couple of other details but you get the idea

Disassemble the whole trans. Soak the main case in Evapo rust then oil the surface  and reassemble

But many will just take a bunch of pictures, even a tracing, restore the trans and reapply

Depends if your trying to restore or maintain/preserve IMHO

The Evaporust website https://www.evaporust.com/chassis shows an alternative to a tank soaking, use a spray bottle on the metal and let it drip into a large pan. The used this method on a Dodge pickup, I did this on a 5 x 5 foot steel dolly. It is more time consuming but it does not take several gallons and a large tank.

Color is more likely closer to the top but somewhere in between. Digital pictures and monitor settings can show things "in a different light" than what they are in person. Color your looking for is brand new cast metal - not blasted but as pulled from the casting material/mold.
