67 steering gear verification
« on: January 13, 2016, 10:07:11 PM »
I've torn down my steering gear box (early 67 1" sector shaft, short shaft for tilt) and am confused about the number of turns.  The shop manual calls out standard manual steering at 4-5/8 turns lock to lock, and 3-3/4 turns for special handling.  Power steering at 3-3/4.

When I turn the input shaft from lock to lock I get 4 full turns plus perhaps 10 more degrees.  More than the 3-3/4 but less than 4-5/8.

This is a replacement box, original gone.  Is this correct for a power steering application?  I suppose that the box at 4+ would be ok, and some other component would limit the steering wheel to 3-3/4.  Certainly if this box were in a manual application, there is no way to get 4-5/8.

There is no tag on the box. :(

Perhaps your answer is that "assembled, on the car, you will have 3-3/4 turns" (stop to stop, with everything installed).

IMHO, the gear box you have sounds to be correct to me, function-wise anyways, since you mentioned it is a replacement.

I have not checked lately but I believe mine was 4 turns too, unfortunately, mine was updated to a later, 1-1/16" inch sector so I do not have my original anymore, just the original tag.

So an SMB-E box is correct for the COMP handling package?

Bob: Thanks, so the box is original and correct in my vehicle. I was sure It was the original. However, being early, who knows what wound up there. '67 has so many strange running changes.
