Axel housing markings
« on: May 30, 2010, 04:21:35 AM »
Anyone know the significance of this marking on the bottom of the banjo?
This is my axel (70 Dearborn), can make out the 'm' but not the other characters/digits.

Here is the marking from the 2400 original mile Dearborn 70 B302 auctioned a few months back.

Anyone seen this on their original axe housings?
Thanks,
Rick

None of the workers I've talked to could identify their purpose - might be an in plant (rear end plant - the Sterling Plant) code.  Most of the time floor jacks and road rash have taken their toll.  Have not see any pattern to the markings other than a combination of letter and numbers

I believe my 68 housing had "B17" on it. that's what it looked like anyway.

Thanks Jeff. I figured if anyone had data on this it might be you.  Guess I'll use 'm 20' for lack of any additional information.
What's the best way to paint this on - any tips?

1/2" cheap brush. You'll need a fair amount of tape so go buy a small can of Rustoleum at the hardware store. Practice on some cardboard a few times, roll the housing over and slap it on. Make the movements fluid and fairly quick. If you take too long of think about it too much you'll get shaky looking markings ;)
