1965 200 6 Thermostat
« on: December 28, 2015, 10:22:31 PM »
I'm having a hard time figuring out which thermostat I should get for a '65 200 engine.  C-4 tranny.  I don't have a/c or p/s.  The engine in question is actually in a '65 Comet but shouldn't matter being it's the same Ford engine as in Mustang's.  The shop manual is confusing to read:

Part 11-5 Specifications/Thermostats/low temp 170 & 200 opens 157-164, fully open 184-186.  High temp 170 & 200 opens 185-192, fully open 211-214.

New thermostats come in numerous temp ranges (160, 180, 192, 195).

Which one would be most correct for a stock '65 200 engine with only an alternator and 4 blade fan?  180?

thanks,
Matt

It depends on where you live. I see VA. Do you drive the car in winter?

Chesapeake, VA.  It's occasionally driven year round as long as the weather's nice.

Original Ford 6 cylinder engine thermostats from the Factory were 192 Degree thermostats.  Most people like to replace them with 195 and 180 degree thermostats.  If you live in a warm climate (Lower warmer states, Hawaii, etc. , I highly recommend using a 180 degree Robertshaw or Mr. Gasket High Flow thermostat.  If you are in a colder climate, Use the 195 degree thermostat.  That is my recommendation.

The 180 degree thermostat is the best for all around year use in most states, You won't have any problems, but if you use the 180 in colder state, It will take longer for the engine to warm up.

I lived on Long Island, NY for 34 years and always had 180 degrees thremostats in all my six bangers, but in the winter, The cars would take longer to warm up I would notice. The last 12 years, I have been here in Melbourne, Florida, and I still use 180 degree thermostats in my six bangers.. No way would I use a 195 degree thermostat here in FLA year round... No way.

Sorry about the last post. I live in VA also and I've used 180 degree thermostats in all of my Mustangs for years with great success.

Tony/Richard, thanks.  I put a Stant 180 degree tstat in several weeks ago and I have been happy w/ it thus far.  The old tstat was a 160 degree one.
