1969 Scoop Emblem
« on: December 24, 2015, 11:57:54 AM »
I know I discussed this a year back or so, but is there anyone out there that their hood scoop reads like mine- 428 Cobrajet? I have found where there are several early models that have both emblems, but most read Cobrajet 428. I'm just trying to make sure mine wasn't flipped at one point in its life. It is the original shaker set up. My car is a Jan 69 build. Thanks in advance!0

This question comes up from time to time and as yet I have not heard that it has had a solid reasonable explanation.  Assuming the Cobra Jet emblem on my 9/19/68 Metuchen scoop is original one can see the location and that it is glued in place.  The 351 and 390 cars had a different, to the rear, location and were attached with two threaded bolts through two pre-drilled holes.  The 428 emblem using the threaded bolt attachment method seems to appear and disappear in an unpredictable and random fashion.  OE, assembly line, photo shoot or, my personal favorite, an owners desire to visibly proclaim the engine displacement of his 428 car who knows ?  Brian

Thanks for the input Brian, I kinda wonder if it was an owners preference as well. Thanks

This has been discussed many times on the CJ forum.
Hope this helps.

Only seen a couple of original cars with both on the scoop and have owned others with just the script (one was a Jan car)

Unfortunately didn't get VINs or dates for the ones I've seen and so many have been played with over the years.

Yes we had a long thread over on the CJ site - without any conclusions that I'm aware of. Just allot of anecdotal and personal, observations

Just for the curious; because the 428 medallion is removable the backside will have some information you may find interesting.  A part number, a manufacturer and maybe a circular date stamp.  Of course nothing definitive just interesting.  Brian

The "428" emblems I have are marked as follows
Across the top - FOMOCO C9ZB-16B621-A
At the bottom "3" "W"  and two other symbol type markings

Mine is the same except the bottom #s, one side has a 5 and the other a 6. Also three boxed in alph characters of CDC. Here's a picture, not sure how readable.
