Trunk latch ID
« on: November 27, 2015, 03:50:33 AM »
Have a few 67-68 (not sure if the syle was used in other years) trunk latches.

Some are the "patchwork" darker grey-ish zinc with the mottled look.  A stamp on them on a rivet has Kysor (or Ky5or or similar).  Others are a more smooth/even silver zinc finish.  Marked "mmp" Rockford. Ill on the case.

Is the Kysor OEM and the mpp repro? Or just different results from different OEM manufacturers?

No clue what each came out of as many came in a bulk buy with a box-o-parts.

Just checked a box of bolts & misc. from a '69 Torino GT I parted out in the mid 80's. The trunk latch is marked:

mmp
ROCKFORD ILL

The non-rusted areas have a shiny plating, appears to be zinc (not shiny enough to be cadmium, in my opinion). The latch is heavily worn, its condition matches the other parts I have, and this car was NOT a vehicle anyone would have put a repro part in! It was heavily rotted to the point the entire front end was flexing at the firewall - not safe to drive. So I have a high degree of confidence this is the original latch.

I don't have the VIN number written anywhere, so I don't know the assembly plant, in case plants obtained latches from different suppliers.

FYI the "patchwork" finish you describe sounds like hot-dip galvanized.

the assembly line latches (69-70 anyway from what I have seen) have a date stamp at top on the tip side facing the back seat area example  9 A   -   jan 1969  & that is why I replate the originals.

My observation (from unrestored cars) is that original 67-68 trunk latches are galvanized.  Reproductions use a different silver cad type look, and stand out.  Ed, not sure about 69-70 but for 67-68 the only option I've found is a good original galvanized part that can be cleaned up.

It id difficult to understand Ed speak sometimes  ;) so no harm no foul. I believe he was referring to the date code on the 69/70 latch's compared to 67/68.

You can use the faux galvanizing technique shown in the Library article to touch up and repair bad spots on the surface

The first post was a clue to which latches came on which cars so I suggested checking the date code as when I judge or restore a 69-70 I check the date code as it is easy to see after it is installed. But don't have any 67-68 cars around here so you 67-68 gurus are the latches date coded like 69-70 ?

Ed, I checked my stash of parts and collection of pictures, and there is no date stamp on 67-68 trunk latches that I see.  I did confirm that they are galvanized.  There are at least two suppliers based on stampings.

yes 2 vendors & plating finish varied.  Did you check both 67-68 assembly line types for date codes as wondering if only 1 vendor dated them or plant thing  as I see dates on Dearborn cars.

Ed, the first two pics are the assembly line originals I could put my hands on quickly.  The third and fourth pics are from a recent posting on eBay - included because of the "mmp" reference in the original post.  I did not find an "mmp" in my collection.  No date codes on any.

look at second photo latch on left very top hand stamped  looks like a B or E  & should be remnants of a # on one side of the letter

John do you know where I was talking about the stamped date  maybe a good close of photo of the top tip of latch on left of your second posted photo & do you know what car that latch came from?

Ed, good eye.  The one with the EO or E0 is from a donor with unknown history.  The other is original to my Dec 66 SJ.  Close up added.  Also I looked the other one over real close and found nothing more than the manufacturer mark.

so that's may 1970   maybe the other vendor never dated them  . Dearborn 69-70s that I work on were dated .
