1965 Inner apron holes - Factory?
« on: November 27, 2015, 12:07:40 AM »
So I have these holes in my wife's Sept 64 SJ built convertible. These holes are too close to the shocker towers to be for the extra braces for convertibles and look to be Monte Carlo bar brace holes but seem to be too perfect to be drilled out. They look to be a factory punch. Any ideas guys? Was the Monte Carlo bar a factory option? Apparently the early verts did not have the additional brace that goes from the cowl to the inner aprons. Is this also true?

Thanks in advance.

Dan.

I think their likely drilled - notice that there is no (at least looks like it) paint on the inside of the hole. If factory they would have been put on the car before the black paint

No

There is at least one thread covering this that includes the TSB drawings and information. Yes it was one of many attempts to reduce cowl shake and other problems with the early Mustangs

Agree, looks like someone added a monte carlo bar.  The additional braces for convertibles started around November '64, so your car is too early to have had them.  The braces also included an under-dash brace to help with cowl shake.  For driving, you might consider installing an export brace and remove it if you want your car judged for authenticity.  An export brace really helps stiffen up any of the 1st generation convertibles.

Thanks for the info Jeff and Caspian65,
Any idea where I may be able to get my hands on an under dash brace or is there a known part number? I can't seem to see it listed anywhere.

Thanks again,

Dan.

Dan the part number (its a C3  number)  is shown in one of the past threads - in the picture from the TSB. Basically it showed the service managers how to retrofit it onto older convertibles

jwc66k posted the picture in one thread and I did in another.

Dash tube brace is small, maybe 1/2" OD.
