1966 Rally Pac Tach
« on: November 12, 2015, 02:59:03 PM »
The 6,000 rpm tach in my Rally Pac quit working so I took it apart to investigate.  It turns out that the wire, called a hairspring, that the
needle is attached to, has broken. I've been in touch with allot of the folks that repair these things and they all just want to convert the tach to a 3 wire tach, not actually repair the wire in the meter. No one makes the meter anymore so I understand why conversion is the best option.
In looking at the mechanism I do believe I can repair it given the right materials. I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with this situation and might be able to tell me what kind of wire the hairspring is made of? I know that it measures .001 of an inch in diameter but
I can't tell if it's copper, stainless, aluminum or some other exotic metal. If there is someone who actually repairs the hairsprings in the meter, I would gladly send it to them if anyone knows of such a person. Otherwise it's a DIY project for me.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks: John

I don't know that they would repair your hairspring issue, but I thought Phidon would repair the original Rally Packs and retain the original style internals & wiring (Faria?).  Did you speak with them and find otherwise?

Check out http://www.instrument-specialties.com

I haven't done business with them yet.  I plan to send my '65 Rally Pac to them over the winter.  However, a friend had the tach in his '65 Shelby done there and was very happy.  They will do a stock rebuild or a 3 wire conversion, whichever you prefer.
