67 390 radiator
« on: November 07, 2015, 11:04:32 PM »
I saw a 67 390 engine bay today and it had the right size radiator, the FoMoCo stamp on the top left hand side,  and the right hose outlets but the over flow tube outlet was on the engine side of the rad and it pointed to the left or drivers side, my verified 390 rad has the overflow outlet pointing to the right and facing the front bumper do these only point differently for rads of different applications ?

There were a number of different suppliers might help if you could figure out which one the car had that your looking at.

In general (checked my pictures - well some of them) and have plenty Modine (San Jose supplier) that face to the rear and drivers side like the one your referring to but also have some that go passenger side forward

Its one of those cases where I have to look from afar and judge, It can be overwhelming the level of detail I know exists and never saw before. I would never have guessed that something like the overflow outlet orientation would be a detail needing attention.

Judging by what appears to be the date code, the radiator in my Dearborn built 390 is not original. Can anyone tell me anything about this stamping? I will get more pics when I start the disassembly.

I have about six 67 390 radiators here right now and those along with previous observations, pictures etc. for SJ and Dearborn/Metuchen confirm that the vast majority had  the overflow outlet pointing to the right and facing the front bumper. I have seen them the other way too but they are in the minority. Sorry but I don't have a explanation for the anomaly but hopefully will find out someday.

Style and location of the stamping matches what we typically find on Dearborn and NJ built cars

7F2 would be the date code  As for the C7ZE-V1 I could not find any reference or car with a -V radiator in my stuff and by 68 Ford had already reduced the number of radiators they were stocking to a very small number so no help there (in the MPC) either for me. The 1 verse 2 at the end appears just to identify the style of radiator. "2" are normally found on western radiators while "1" are found on eastern

With the C7ZE stampings that indicates It is a 67 only radiator given the 68 radiators were all wider (C8 marked also). I would guess as has been discussed in other threads before that it might be a generic service radiator meant to fit multiple applications. If it has automatic cooler fittings that would help confirm the scenario if not it would blow may theory to he!!.

Thanks guys... I couldn’t find anything regarding the V1 either. Did see a thread on another forum, but no conclusion. FWIW, the A/T cooler fittings  are present so Bob's theory holds water.
