Topic: 64 1/2 pace car For Sale on ebay

 anybody out there well versed on these pace cars.  serial number of this one is  5F07F117627  down in florida.   door data tag looks correct  color C  interior 42 - i know interior is currently incorrect ( why was it done with pony seats?)   but is it a REAL pace car?  anybody know this car?.  i did own a late march pagoda green F code convert .  hey- it's where it all began!  is there a 64.5  pace car registry

Looks legit to me, considering that the car is not cut up and the front sectioned in.  Highly unlikely though.

Probably needs to be restored, interior should be all white with blue carpet and dash.

They're kind of rare, but not particularly valuable or desirable.  Ford gave these away as part of a sales promotion and were cheap on the options.  260 2V auto with drum brakes, kinda goes against the grain of what the actual track cars were.

nice to hear from you charles-   why in earth would someone install "pony" seats. ?   did they have a blue crash pad?   med blue carpet i believe.   door panels ? white or blue?  color of seat belts ?- blue i suppose.  a little garish with the decals  - i  own  & concours restored a 70 gt500  & a #2  70 boss 302

The car for sale has a large gold winged sticker on the dash below the radio, but the photo they show of HFII at the wheel does not have a winged sticker. There's something else below the radio, but not what's on the car for sale. Are they the same car or was HFII sitting in one of the backup cars?

It looks like someone just installed the deluxe covers over the original seats.  Black and white were not an option any way.

Yes, all white except dash and carpet.  Seat belts usually black with chrome buckles.

The actual pace car for sale has a few items that don't match up with pictures from race day 1964.

There is another one listed on the MCA Club website. http://www.mustang.org/showthread.php/6625-1964-indianapolis-pace-car-for-sale  It needs a a full restoration.  It was scheduled to be built the same day for the same DSO as the one on ebay in Florida.  VINs are only 10 away from each other.  If he still has it I think he is asking around $10K for it.  I have one I am restoring that was built a few days earlier.

There is not a separate Pace Car Registry.  A lot of the cars are listed in the In Search of Mustangs Registry though. http://www.insearchofmustangs.org/Registry.aspx

I actually purchased that Pace Car mentioned above (#117617) and it was a true one.  It had the etching on the radiator support (to verify it as original) along with many other correct date codes.  I estimated it as around 75% original outside of the incorrect interior - everything from the wrong seats to the wrong carpet and wrong air cleaner.  The sheet metal was 100% correct with build dates to coincide with the door plate data tag.  It will take an awful lot of time, money, labor, and love to restore this vehicle. 

At the time I got it, the previous owner did not recognize that it was a pace car nor did they seem to care.  (that's why it was sold at such a low price)  ...and that is why it was restored once(?) as a white car with blue interior.  It was even given a black console along with other non original modifications.
