68 Engine Compartment (Under Hood) Light Assembly
« on: October 31, 2015, 09:37:08 AM »
I wasn't sure whether to start a new topic or add to an earlier thread on this same issue but my question pertains to the 68 model year and not 67.

Is the early 68 (Dec 67) engine compartment (under hood) light different then 67, i.e. part numbers/wire routing/connectors, etc?  I'm in search of these parts as the option was original to the car but no longer has this assembly installed.

Hopefully, I have some information which may help.

1)   According to the 1967 (page dated 9/16/66) and 1968 (page dated 3/4/68) Electrical Assembly Manuals, the Engine Lamp mounting Bracket, socket and wiring clip that mounts with the Bracket, are the same. For some reason, the 1967 Assembly Manual notes the Bracket and socket as Engineering Part # C7ZB-15702-A and the Wiring Harness portion as C7SB-15702-B, while the 1968 Assembly Manual shows Engineering # C7ZB-15702-A for the Bracket, socket and wiring. I’m not sure why this is, unless there is a connector from the wire from the socket, to the wire that goes to the inline fuse, then to the front (hot) side of the starter solenoid. If there is a connector, then I do not have the correct assembly for mine, as mine goes directly from the socket to the inline fuse and then to the solenoid. Both the 1967 and 1968 Assembly Manuals show it this way.

2)  The routing, and some of the clips used on the wire from the sockert to the inline fuse, do differ between 1967 and 1968. On the 1967, the wiring from the socket is held onto the horizontal hood reinforcing by 2 – 379485-S clips that push into holes in the reinforcing; while the 1968 uses 1-372303-S clip (rubber coated S type clip) which pushes onto the sheet metal flange of the rectangular “depression” located in the center rear of the hood. From these clips, in both the 1967 and 1968 models, the wire then goes through the access hole located at the front of the depression and toward the Driver’s side, then along the depression toward the rear of the hood, exiting in another access hole at the rear of the hood. Upon exiting the hole, there should be a “locater hole” in both 67 and 68’s, into which a wiring clip that is part of the harness, is inserted. From this locater hole, for both 67 and 68’s, the wiring follows along the shock tower to cowl brace, held on with 3 - # 379061-S clips (4 for 1968 if with Speed Control).
For 1967, the wire then goes from the front of the brace, to the inline fuse, through an existing clip located just below the Starter Solenoid, then to the front (hot) side of the solenoid.
For 1968, after leaving the front of the brace, there is an additional clip (# 380753-S) located on the front of the shock tower, that the wire goes through before going to the inline fuse, after which it follows the same route as the 67’s.

As I noted at the start, this information is based on the 1967 and 1968 Electrical Assembly Manuals, and as such, could differ from what may be found on unrestored original applications. However, it at least has some kind of documentation as to what was intended.

Wouldn't the under hood light come with trunk light system as well?

Yes, something special. The Under-hood light is part of the "Courtesy Light Group", which also included the luggage compartment light, glove box light, glove box lock, and, on hardtop models, an under-dash courtesy light. This is for 1967 - I'm not sure about 1968.

Would guess that the light could be added by the dealer or even the first owner by itself.

Not a difficult add

...not difficult to add, just impossible to find.  If anyone has a 67/68 light assembly that's taking up space on the shelf, feel free to PM me.
Thanks for the info/details.

Stand in line, another hen's tooth, but there are reproduction ones that look pretty good.

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but I thought it would be better to add this here so that info re: engine compartment light all in one place.

Does anyone know what the fuse capacity should be for the engine compartment light?  It requires an inline fuse but mine is currently empty and I don't know what to insert (68 FB).

And more broadly, do the assembly manuals or any other documentation have a comprehensive list of needed fuses, their locations and which ones should be used for which app?  I looked at my wiring diagrams in my electrical assembly manual but don't see anything.

Thank you.

I don't have an owners manual, so if anyone can share the fuse info it would be much appreciated.

For future reference, my San Jose dec 67 coupe had the underwood light. The option stated on the marti report was visibility group. Included from what I have found is underwood and trunk light, courtesy lights, glovebox light, glovebox lock, remote drivers mirror.
San Jose built (Mid Dec 67) Non GT J code Coupe.
Wimbledon White with Parchment Bench seat,
Visibility Group, Power Steering, Power Disc Brakes, Selectaire Conditioner, AM radio, Heavy Duty suspension, Deluxe Belts, Deluxe Wheel Covers, 3.00:1 rear.

Unique 1 of 1 car. Just like every other car...

Picking up this old thread as I could not find any others on the under hood light.  Does anyone have photos showing the routing of the light and wiring?  I see it described here but a photo would be useful.  Working on a 68 with the visibility group option where this was included but long gone.
