Correct Water Pump - Dec 67 SJ Built J Code
« on: October 27, 2015, 07:30:03 PM »
Have read many posts here and on other forums trying to determine the correct water pump for a Dec 67 SJ built J Code Cougar with AC. There seem to be 3 schools of thought

1) both C8OE-D and C8AE-J are found on 302's but the latter is specific to A/C cars (which means I should look for a J)
2) C8AE-J is found on later production 68s so early production cars would have the C8OE-D (which means I should look for a D), and
3) some cite Bob Mannel's book that there were 3 water pumps used on 68 small blocks: C6OE-A (early 68 production), C8OE-D, and C8AE-J, although some have said the C6OE-A was only found on 289s not 302s (which could be a vote for D or J)

Since most of the threads date back several years, I'm turning to the current crowd to see if there is a current consensus. Input is appreciated.

Also would like to confirm the pump on this particular car would be painted engine color with likely all bolt heads painted, even those attaching other bracketed equipment - another discussion where this seems to be the common opinion.

Thanks.

I have C8AE-J on our 68 GT350 with AC It was built 12-02-67. I can not say for sure that it was never changed.
I have a few pumps and could check for you once you decide which one.

agree with the C6 pump on 289not 302 . The rest sounds up to date. The bolts are painted however technically the bracket bolts would have signs of wrench /socket marks if you really want to be authentic.

Sounds like the C8AE-J is the right pump for my car and it's build date. Can anyone recommend a good source for a quality rebuilt pump?

Here is a core, buy it and take it to your local NAPA store and request a "rebuild and return". They send it out for rebuild and return the pump you send in. Takes a couple weeks, but you get back what you send.

I replaced my water pump last year and found George at silvercat191@gmail.com (408-630-1342).  He had a whole stock of rebuilt, date coded water pumps.  He may be able to help you out. Good luck.
