The flare is likely a manufacturers thing - while another supplier may have made the non flared style. Sort of like the heat shields, have seen two different versions of those so far (CJ) 

Different plants likely got more of one and less or none of the others.

We are getting off thread a bit ;)

Yes, here is a photo showing the Cougar 2V or 1968 390-2V (X-Code) snorkel ink stamp.


Question, did the early 1968 390-4V snorkels have the vacuum operated door for the heat stove? or just the thermal activated door?

I have with and without vacuum motors on 1968 - 289/302 & 390-2V snorkels. The MPC states 'no motors' on the descriptions for service replacement snorkels.

The tapered out top seems to be the service issue on the S tubes. The line part not having the taper.
The S Tube with the different slots is the KR 500 because no 2 are the same and is needs to be rotated. Lots going on with the opening of the long KR snorkel going somewhat over the mid year only starter delay relay.

On full size 390/428 cars at least 68-70 the angle of the snorkel is what differentiated between 2V and 4V. The angled back one that people flip for a poor copy 428 CJ is a 2V

How should we explain-away the Ford documentation that seems to clearly indicate the opposit for a 1968 390 4V?  The attached photo from WT8095 (on the 2nd page of this thread) appears to show the snorkel being a -A with a rear offset angle. I'm not familure with the 428 CJ parts or the "flip" issue mentioned.  However, notwithstanding any anomalies from a particular factory or problems with parts availability during any part of the production year, it seems the rear offset snorkel, at least designed originally, could be correct for a 68 390 GT engine...right?

We might be mixing terminology here. When Kerry said "the angled back one that people flip for a poor copy 428 CJ is a 2V," I believe (correct me if I'm wrong, Kerry!) he is referring to what I've been calling a "forward offset". In John's photo, I would describe the one on the right as having "forward offset" because the centerline of the long portion is shifted forward of the point where it exits the air cleaner body. I could see where this could be described as "angled back", since the snorkel first makes a turn toward the front, then angles back. For the record, I'm not claiming "rear offset" or "forward offset" are the correct terms, it's just what I've called them and I apologize if I've created any confusion. I suppose I should start using part numbers instead.

Under this assumption, I believe Kerry is saying that the snorkel on the right (C8WY-A) is the 2V snorkel (which jives with the '68 chassis manual) and is the one that people flip to clone the CJ one (far left). The middle one is the C8OF-A that was intended for the 390GT.

Pretty easy IMHO we could (if it does not match what is found in regular production) be ignore, like all the other things written and drawn in Ford documents that never came to pass or was a mistake from the beginning. Consider that allot of the pages in the assembly manuals are there because they replaced pages that had incorrect information on them - the rest were mostly/likely production changes

Thank you for doing a better job of explaining my intent Dave. Yes on the snorkel line up right one is the 2V.
The full size FE 4V used the same snorkel as the 68 390 GT with exception of the vacuum on the underside.

Also, thanks for the additional pics...I suspect this car would prove to be 1 of 1 if the delux report was ordered. 
It would be interesting to know what it sold for.

I forgot to look at the build date on that one - it's the day before mine was built (also at San Jose)! So I'm comfortable using the C8OF snorkel on mine. But there's still the 4+ cars that you have photos of with C8WY snorkels, I don't think we can rule those out. I'll post pics of those too if I run across some. So far I've been seeing them consistently on X-code motors, and a couple on S-codes, but the S-code ones I've seen have been fully-restored cars that have generally had "issues".

This information is from the Feb 1968 issue of Shop Tips. The Group 2 statement "override system attached directly to air cleaner" is referring to the round vacuum valve on the side of the air cleaner.

Although the photograph above of the survivor is interesting I have both the forward and rear angled snorkels. There is no way to make the rear angled one work with the heat shield. I bought another complete air cleaner assembly with snorkel, S tube and heat shield to work through the issue. That one also had a snorkel which angled forward and everything lined up. If pic is required I took some today and can post. The S tube does fit into the flare on underside of snorkel. The trap door does not have a vacuum pod.

A description of how it doesn't work would be more helpful, or better yet photos of both configurations, including the heat shields.
