67 ribbed panel body color finish
« on: October 18, 2015, 08:18:15 PM »
Were the ribbed tail light panels that were painted to match the body color painted with the same paint and finish(shine) as the body?

They look to be, though I've never found/seen an original paint car with body color rear louvered panels other than the one white proto-type used in the early ads

I've got a pair of originals that were from a lime gold car.  Thin paint on the back, looks to be original.  Gray primer under the green.

Thanks....looking for a pair of originals for a '67 black fastback....appears that finding one is difficult and even more difficult to find all the original fasteners with it.

I have two original sets. One set on my 67 coupe and one set on my 68 Fastback...I have always seen them body color but something tells me my fastback set had charcoal black on them..That is the way I have them...I do not have concours cars tho...Most of the originals I see or see pics of are body color but I have never seen a pic of them on a red, blue or black car.(other than repos)I have seen green on green, white on white but I remember a black set on a 67 Fastback that was yellow.
They have never been a easy thing to find..
Considering how many sets were made it may be a difficult answer to get

Are either original to the cars?   Noted on the Marti report?

Would guess the gray style one came with the 2 digit paint code on the door tag like others

The one that is on a 68 can't be original. The option was only offered in 67.

I am restoring a 67 S code fastback that is Wimbledon White with the body color ribbed panels. I'll get some pics some time.

No...neither set original to the cars..The coupe set came out of Nova Scotia about 8 years ago. They were black with polished fins and had been clear coated. The fastback set I pulled out of Miami in the mid 80's..

If its the pic of the white proto type Fastback that I have seen numerous times before you may look closely and see that the fastback actually has a coupe/conv set on it....

Depends on which one - there is a prototype fastback that was eventually used in tests (it was crashed and totaled) that had the body color rear panel which was the fastback version

Have to dig out the film strips to see if its the same or different from the preproduction sales model they used

That one is certainly correct...I have pictures of a prototype/pre production fastback that has the coupe panel.I can dig out the books tomorrow.
I have never seen the above picture before..

Here's a shot of a pre-production '67 Fastback with the Coupe/Convertible ribbed taillight panel.
Also note the missing quad exhaust tips, and incorrect wheel center caps as well...

Being that I'm going to paint mine black to match the car....would I be better off preparing them without sandblasting them to avoid leaving the textured finish that might show under the paint.......I have glass beads that I think will leave them smooth to result in a smooth paint finish.  I'll experiment on the back side.
