67 390 air filter housing

Did all S code engines for 67 come with a non snorkel, ''open'' air filter housing ? Would this include cougars too?

The Fairlanes and Rancheros I've seen did not.

I was under the impression that all S codes were the GT engine and got the chrome dress up parts, exhaust manifolds and the chicken wire lower housing.

The 67 GT Cougars had the open type air cleaner.  The Cougars with the 390 but not the GT option had the snorkel type.  These cars have the 6.5 litre badges instead of GT ones.

There are a number of different bases - ones without the attachment for the breathers and those with. Then add the snorkel and non-snorkel combination - Larger cars (Fiarlanes and such ) are a thicker base

Some appears to be related to emission requirements and possibly the trim package though we have original examples that didn't follow that last pattern and may be more of an early late thing.

Confusing subject for some cars that has been hashed around for 20 years

you can also add in the orange or blue CU decal just to confuse things more ;)

Home made ones have been made for years - unfortunately I don't have that much experience with the 49 state versions. Maybe someone else that has a collection of these can help - seems that the factory open bases were not particularly nicely (neatly) made so it might be difficult though like anything maybe the details (screen shape and design for one) might prove beneficial in the research

The one in the picture appears to be a 49 state style and most likely used on non-GT's (though that still doesn't make allot of sense but that is another subject.

In California have had original GTs with the snorkel also - so maybe a supply of changing regulations there.

Correct no part/engineering numbers or stamping dates (that I can recall seeing) on the base

The one in the picture lacks the breather nipple

Never seen the blue style in the picture (straight) used

have seen a few San Jose built with the large semi-circle blue R blue style decal on the lid

I've been researching 1967 390 Mustang Air Cleaner Assemblies for several years now, and while I do not have conclusive proof of what is and is not correct for every 1967 390 Mustang (there may be variations between the three final assembly plants, and/or the production dates at each one as well), the attached file contains the basic information I have found so far...

If anyone has evidence contrary to my findings, please let me know and I will update my records!

Nice effort - been following these (since there has been so much conflicting findings and info over the years) for about 20 years. Unfortunately so few untouched original cars out there.  Also doesn't help that we didn't collect allot of related VINs and such in the past.

Agree that the taller Fairlane air cleaners are often found today (and in the past) on Mustangs and Cougar likely because many of the factory air cleaners were tossed early in the car's life in an effort to improve performance.

Just a thought but it would help (if you still have access to the info) to start a list with the buildsheet info VIN,  date, DSO, GT/GTA and air cleaner part number, from the examples we have to possibly develop a pattern. Currently using the handling package to indicate the GT package.

As reported earlier have owned two GTA's (72 DSO) with the snorkel and breather style air cleaners during the 80's that I believe were original to the cars. Picture of the one air cleaner I posted above was from the fastback - still looking for the VIN of that car.


One of the biggest challenge I've has been with the different applications (according to some of Ford part books for service parts) in California using a trim code (the GT package) as a determining factory for emissions.  How side stripes, exhaust tips and grill lights have an effect or emissions really doesn't make allot of sense since nothing in the drivetrain changed between the Non-GT and the GT. Have not see any documentation of this possible difference (in air cleaner application) in any state or smog check books I have from the period - nor in other brands of cars of the period

Yep - I've got a spreadsheet with data from 39 1967 Mustang build sheets so far, and 14 of them are for 390 equipped cars (see attachment below).  However, instead of the handling package, I've been using the "SPEC EQUIP. GRP." box in Section B/Column 4 to identify the GT package ("X" = GT, blank = Non-GT).

Unfortunately, since most of the data set is from the Metuchen plant, it's hard to say for sure what they were doing at the Dearborn and San Jose factories - especially for the DSO 71 and 72 cars (and thanks for the additional info about your two DSO 72 GTAs).

BTW - You will notice that 7T02S1583xx doesn't have an "X" in the SPEC EQUIP. GRP. box - that portion of its particular build sheet is damaged, but I'm about 99% sure that it is a GT...
