Jan 1969 Built Dearborn R-Code Undercarriage Question
« on: September 19, 2015, 11:16:42 PM »
I know this question is annoying to some, but I have searched around and I get a lot of different opinions. I know you guys are the pros so I will go with what you recommend. I am to the point of needing to paint the underneath of my car soon. Knowing it is a 1969 Jan build, would the underneath be all red oxidized primer to the firewall area or is it painted the color of the car underneath? Thanks for any advice.

Jan 69 seems too late for red oxide on floor pans at Dearborn. Maybe Jeff S has some pictures. More likely a variation of batch paint color IMO.

Ok cool what do you mean exactly by patch paint color? Do you mean paint color of the car?

Batch paint or slop paint is mixed together paint ruminants from the plant paint department used on the underside of Dearborn built cars. You might use the search feature to read the other threads on the subject.

Here on the forum, I was given many suggestions as to how to find the batch color used on my car. The one that worked was to remove the rear axle vent tube bracket from the bottom of the car and sure enough, original batch color underneath. Looking at it before restoration, I'd never had known that color was under there.
Accurate looking but not a Concours Restoration/build. See my build photo gallery at 69GT350 Hertz Build

Ok cooll well this car was really original and I had the entire floor cut out and all I see is like a flat red looking color (you'll  have to give me a little  slack I have a color  vision deficiency). The car is candy apple red.

Its possible, like mine that was repainted a couple of times (Candy Apple Red) that a lot of the body spray from the repaints got under the car and your not seeing the true original color. See page 21 (http://redshost.com/gt350/index021.html) of my gallery where I was sure mine had Red Oxide only to find a Batch color protected under that vent tube bracket.

Looking at my spread sheet I see a couple of groups/periods were red oxide was used at Dearborn. Between this periods forms of batch color was applied in its place on the floor panels (firewall rearward)

Have periods in late Dec-early Jan, Early Feb and Early April currently. But your best source (as others have suggested) is your own car. Check and document what you find then reproduce the color you found. That is where the answers can be found

Much of this has been discussed in prior threads and rather than retrace that again I suggest you read them and if there is still some questions - please ask them.
