65 NOS gas cap
« on: September 14, 2015, 07:32:40 AM »
Hello All,

I have the chance to buy an NOS 65 gas cap - it looks ok, but there is no visible Ford logotype or parts number on the cap - is this correct or should there be some visible signs of that (Fomoco or parts#)?
thanks,
Claes

Looking at the OE cap and the repro that's on my 65 and it's very difficult to pick out any difference.  The 'PRO' logo, the tether attaching round head bolts and the larger vent hole are the stand out give a ways.  My OE cap has no logo or part numbers that I can easily see.   Brian

Here is a picture of the back side. IMO the wire looks original - repros are usually not that fine threaded. //Claes

look for a SMCO casting on the inside of the cap.  very easily to tell if original or a repo cap

The red seal lock nut and leather filler seal are good indicators that it's an OEM piece.  Look for either 'SM' stamping on the back or some later have 'AUTOLITE'.

Congratulations and nice find.  Read your post and had another look at my cap.  Found the S M logo.  Not on the cap but on the backing plate.  The tether posts, on mine, are a different style.  Could this difference be a result of assembly line vs service part or simply of when and where it was installed ?  Thanks,  Brian

The logo is "SMCO" (stylized) - made by Stant. Photo shows an aftermarket cap as a logo sample only. Vintage unknown.
