'67 ribbed tail light panel option
« on: September 09, 2015, 01:54:05 PM »
Although I try to be a "purist" with my cars....I would add an original, ribbed tail light panel if I found one with all the original fasteners, spacers, etc.  Am I correct that  without the original, curved spacers and other specific hardware, it would very difficult to mount it the way the factory did?  The original ones I've seen for sale don't seem to have any hardware with them other than the studs themselves.  If I did add it, although not original to the car, I would want it mounted as the factory would  have done.

I'm not sure about the way it was fastened, but they look really nice I think, no matter how you put it on as long as it is neat.
I don't always downshift, but when I do it is near a Prius so they can hear me hurting the environment.

This has been discussed before.  Here is a link:

Not sure why the pics are missing. That is a bummer if it happens a lot.  I'll manually fix this one next.

The nuts and rubber washers are somewhat hard to find.  I've never found the rubber washers - had to make them when some were missing.

Looks like the original mounting hardware may be even harder to find than the panel itself.

More difficult, I would absolutely agree.  I've got three sets of original panels, but original hardware only for one.  In looking at cars at shows, whether as a spectator or judge, I always look at these.  About one in 10 cars has it right.

Mine has it listed on the Marti report and build sheet, but before I helped judge this car (and later bought it) at the Tucson regional, I had never seen one before.  I wonder how many had them?

Did the car have a two digit paint code? Noticed the gray panel.

Been discussed before but on those cars the taillight panel behind the optional panel was painted the charcoal color as well as the end caps as shown on the paint chips page for 67's

Think I've posted a picture of an original car with the bolt on panel before here (know I have on a number of other sites) to show the tapper at the trunk opening and other factory details. Will have to look and post again.

Not the thread with the picture but somewhat related

Plus the gray shown in the picture is too light IMO, looks closer to an Argent.  But pictures can be deceiving.  The color charts call for a dark gray.  I've done quite a bit of research and have no solid evidence, but ended up settling on a paint code that I chased through several cross reference charts.

Looks like a Brittany Blue (Q) car, so if it originally had the rear two tone paint would have a paint code of Q5

Yes that looks argent. Lots of owners have chosen that color during the repainting

Found the thread

The the picture didn't include the detail the end caps had the grey also as does the trunk lid depending on body style

License plate shield is even still in place.  Sorry don't have a vin to go along with this. Picture was taken back in the mid 80's when we were growing Mustangs Plus. Glad I grabbed a picture when I did, haven't found another with the detail to take since that day

No, sorry, the paint code is just Q on the build sheet and Marti and door tag, but it did originally come with the rear tail light panel as shown by all the documentation.

Must have been one of the body color version

Interesting to compare to others. On early and late forms there is no place to indicate the option (if it was even available)

Hi
I have a 67 San Jose mustang fastback gta in spring time yellow with the factory option ribbed tail light rear panel.
The ribbed panel is painted black and so is some of the area behind the panel.
Is it possible that the black is factory or should it be raw cast finish?
Cheers

Guess the threads didn't come up in the search. Maybe it was the word choice.

Does your car have two digits as the paint code?

No it would not have been black if so it would have been dark grey as noted in the other threads. And no it would not have been installed in bare casting - unfinished.

Going to merge these post to one of the other threads ;)

Thanks Jeff
My car has a paint code of 8 spring time yellow.
So just to clarify, it has the lower back panel grille option from factory.
Does that mean the colour behind the rear grille should be same as the body colour (yellow)?
Cheers mate.

If you've confirmed with a Marti report that it had the option and the paint code on the door tag and Marti report is a single digit as I understand it it would not have the gray rear taillight panel or the tail light panel grill painted gray
