'67 original overhead console on fastback
« on: September 01, 2015, 09:07:13 PM »
Although it was originally installed on the car, previous owner left the overhead console off(for some reason)during restoration.  I have an original one to reinstall.  I can feel that both front and rear mounting brackets are still in place.  With regard to the wire attachment at the rear of the console,  without having to "fish around" too much, can someone tell me where I would expect to find that, assuming it was left in place during removal of the console? ( A picture of that wire would, of course, be great)  Also, I assume the ground wire at the front goes on one of the two mounting screws?

                                                                                                        Thanks...

Look at your original console at where the wire end is that will tell you where to look. Yes the front ground wire goes under the screw.

I would remove your passenger sill plate and be sure that the green wire is there before cutting any holes in the headliner.

Thanks for the picture...hopefully the wire is coming out from under the rear mount on mine as well.

You might find out that the headliner wasn't installed like the factory did, where originally it was wrapped under the windshield & backglass rubber weatherstrips. This could assist you in locating or fishing a wire up to where it needs to be if it is true.

Roll the backglass rubber down a bit (you'll need to drop out the filler/finish panel first) push back the rubber and see if you can see the end of the headliner material. If so, CAREFULLY, unglue the headliner, say starting in the center, but leaning towards the passengers side (where the wire comes up). You should see it if it's in there or you could then feel under the headliner with your fingers. Keep in mind that old headliner material will tear very easily depending how old the material is. (anything 5 years old or older could be high risk~depending how much sun/heat exposure)

Since the fastback has the finish panel, you may have some forgiveness in lowering the headliner some that wouldn't be as easily accomplished on a Coupe, for example.

Thanks....do you happen to know what type of  screw originally held  the console in place...I'm assuming 4 round head Phillips?

Try the library section of this forum under the topic "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheets 67-78". You will find two spreadsheet files, one by part number, the other by application. Your answer is there.

Is the path of the wire in your picture where the factory routed it?  I'm looking for the easiest pace to try to find the wire...I guess, as suggested that would  be under the passenger door sill trim.

Yes, assembly manual shows it under the passengers side sill plate and also is on my 67 Coupe, nearly identicle to John's fastback images.

My neighbor gave me a device to look into small places(like in an engine).  It has a small screen and a flexible shaft with a light at the end.  I was able to put it into the headliner through a hole that wouldn't show after mounting the console and find the original wire connection for the console.  I can now install it as original.  Hard to believe PO went to the trouble of putting a new head liner and just left out the console(for me to install), but I'm just glad the wire was still in tact.

Well....I hooked up the wire to the console.  The map  lights only work when either the doors are open, or the interior lights are selected with the headlight switch.  I assume this it not correct and that they should work independently of the other interior lights?  The switches themselves are working fine and do turn the map lights on and off, but only as I mentioned.

This connection to the incorrect source SHOULD be inside the A-pillar at the door switch. You may need to pull the kick panel out to sort things out but the green/yelow wire that feeds the console must be incorrectly connected to the black/blue wire of the main underdash harness at or near the passengers door switch. The green/yellow wire (console feed wire/harness) should have a male bullet jumper lead at that end and the male bullet jumper plugs into the door switch while the other female bullet connector plugs into the main underdash harness's green/yellow wire (NOT into the blue/black wire of the main harness)
