68 S code heat riser screw
« on: August 23, 2015, 10:23:44 PM »
I have an exhaust heat shield and riser tube for my S code engine. There is a screw hole to attach the riser to the shield. From looking at a few photos I found online, it appears the correct screw should be a hex washer hear sheet metal screw (non-self-tapping). I could not find this fastener listed in the MPC. Can someone confirm this is the correct style of screw? FYI, a #6 and a #8 machine screw do not fit, and a self-tapping sheet metal screw also would not fit. But this one went in perfectly. I suspect it might be a bit too long though.

Looks like the correct one from the external  side - what will be seen.

After a bit more searching, I did find a reference for this screw in the '75 MPC. It's listed with the riser tube in section 9652. The screw is 55872-S --- 8-18 x ¼ hex washer self tapping. The one I show in the photo is a little longer than 1/4.

Jim, I didn't see this one listed in your spreadsheet. I'll keep working on the other big block fasteners we've discussed...

I have it listed for 69 390, 428 and 428CJ only, from the 69 Chassis manual, which is why you don't have it in the 67-68 list. I'll check out your reference.

Ah - I didn't think to look at your spreadsheets for other years! And I have the '68 chassis manual, but it only shows the heat shield and riser, not the screw. I didn't check the '69 since I don't have a copy. Thanks!

It's a lot easier for me using my master list. It's a bit to big a file to add as an attachment to a post as it has 9385 entries, the last two are the 390 intake manifold spacers you researched.
