Hood Hinge Finish Confirmation
« on: August 14, 2015, 10:09:23 PM »
I searched this forum and some others.  I'm looking for confirmation that I should paint the hood hinges and springs in semi-gloss black.  My Mustang is a 65 Dearborn built Fastback.  The build date is September 2, 1964.  What is the finish of the mounting bolts?

Edit:  Would this be the approximate gloss level?  https://www.npdlink.com/store/products/hood_hinge_less_spring_rh-176375-1.html.  Also would you ever see a mix-n-match of finishes?  For example, Semi-gloss painted hinges and Phosphate and Oil finished springs.

You have a very early 1965 Fastback. I know of other early cars like yours and the hood hinges were painted semi gloss black. I've never seen a mix-match of the finishes.

Sept '64 would have had black hood hinges.

Also, friendly FYI, the date on the warranty plate is the scheduled build date.  The actual day it was built could be days/weeks before or after.

I was pretty confident that the hinges and springs would have been painted semi-gloss black.  I was looking for validation.  Thanks, much appreciated.

As far as the build date goes, I'm not going by the warranty plate.  When the car was purchased by my dad back in 1980 the original doors were long gone and replaced with doors from a 66 Fastback.  By looking at the date codes stamped in the sheet metal, the VIN and with the help of the folks on this forum, I came up with an approximate build date September 2, 1965.  Here's the thread if you care to read it:

Ok, fair enough.  Just note that there is no documentation or database available for 64.5-66 cars, so nobody can say for sure what the actual build date was on most of the cars made during those years.

Yea, that's a bummer.  I would love to have a Marti Report for my car.

Yup, approximate build date should be September 2, 1964 not September, 2 1965.  Good catch.

No problem. I was interested in this as I wondered when the change occurred from painted to bare steel at Dearborn ?
Thanks

I believe the general consensus is that change over from painted to phosphate and oil was in late September 64 through October 64  time frame.

Which plant?

Don't think I've seen October San Jose examples in black originally

What would and October 64 San Jose car have typically Jeff?  Oct 9, 64 build date, K code.

Thanks,
Rich
