65-66 Brake Booster
« on: August 04, 2015, 10:58:31 PM »
I'm restoring a factory booster and was just wondering what was inside. Can I pull it apart and re-assemble without too much difficulty? Were the two halves painted separately?
Was working fine but are there parts in there that should be looked at/cleaned/replaced?

Thanks.

You need to send it to a specialized brake shop. (Down under?)

The inner components are fairly simple, the diaphragm is what usually fails.

If you feel very confident in your abilities to disassemble and reassemble things, you could tackle this on your own; parts are readily available. If you have the slightest doubt though, have it rebuilt, it's not the easiest of things to do.

I had an original booster on my last Dearborn built '65 and appeared to have been painted after assembly, but don't necessarily know if this applies across the board, especially since things varied depending on when and where the car was built.

That's the best I can do on this question. You should be able to look online and find diagrams or photos that detail the inside of your booster and maybe look up any Mustang Monthly Articles online where they performed a rebuild.

Good luck...Ray

I have never been able to find any parts to rebuild one.  At one time many shops would repair these but now it seems that only a few places specialize in that job, and I think it may be due to the lack to parts.  If you do take it apart and find a source of parts would you share that information with us?

Try Power Brake Exchange in San Jose, CA http://www.pwrbrake.com/ I've done business with them in the past with good results. At one time, they had a half dozen 67 type proportioning valves sitting on the shelf. No guarantees, just an additional possible source.

Used both Power Brake exchange and Dewey. Would not expect an issue using either
