License Plate Tags
« on: August 01, 2015, 05:21:46 PM »
What Month and Year Tags would I need for a 1967 California mustang sold on 12-24-1966?

I'm having a disagreement on the home front on which month and year tags to use.

Thanks for all your help,

Depends on what state. The first issue California plate would have a December sticker as the month for renewal and an year expiration sticker of 1967.

For California in 67 no month decal only year.

Odd and even go (well that was the idea) in different upper corners following the stamped odd number in the plate (63)

All vehicle licenses at that time all came due at the end of the year so no need for a month decal though most of the vendors sell them. For this reason it normally worked out better if you approached an owner right before December as Christmas  and DMV bills were coming due.  Favorite hunting season for cars back then

Individual months came later as DMV finally figured out it was better to space the load of renewals around the full calendar

I would think to be legal, you would have to have a 2015 or 2016 year sticker.  ;)

Not sure anyone is thinking of driving these cars with the plates that way just showing or storing. If you have the original plates or correct ones for your cars time period registered to the car you can add the little corner sections the older cars some times use or make your own and run the current month and year.

In most cases you will not get stopped with a nicely driven weekend driver in the state.- by my experience. IF stopped be polite and take the fix-it ticket and correct things

In Florida we have a YOM, or Year Of Make program where you can take an original issue, un-used plate from the same year as the car and have it registered for use. You have to send the plate to the DMV where they inspect it and put a sticker in one of the corners. I'm getting ready to send off my 68-69 plate soon.
Accurate looking but not a Concours Restoration/build. See my build photo gallery at 69GT350 Hertz Build

Yes CA has a similar option ($$$$) - sort of unfortunately IMHO. Don't have to send in the plates. But if done that way (as you describe) can't run the original tags - basis of the OPs question
