You have 5 stripes on your driveline?  Or did you get the number 5 from the other posting :)

Will look it up - for some reason I was thinking this one of your cars was a J code :(

Looked through what I've got and the best I could find was a group of C code Mustangs with 4 speeds built in early June - hopefully there was not a change between April and June.   Its not unusual for these colors to change 2-4 times during a production year.

From front to back as listed on the buildsheets

Lavender - Dark Green & Light Green

The following is an example of location and look of the factory applied stripes (by the supplier) Much messier that what you'll see on some "restored" cars :(

This first one will give you an idea of what the lavender and light green (picture #2 for light green also)  looked like

Dark green is more of a Hunter Green

For the yoke discussion is your driveline a solid or tube in tube?

Tube in tube - one yoke attached to a smaller tube inside a larger tube that is attached to the yoke at the other end

Single tube - one piece of pipe with a yoke attached at both ends

OK, I know I'm working on a 67 with a C4 trans but it looks as though we could match up to this one. I'm using this one picture Jeff posted earlier that looks to be pretty much the same color stripes as used on my 67 with a C4. MPC has both the 68 NON-GT 289/302, 4 speed or c4 auto as using the same replacement number C7ZZ-4602-G, same as the majority of the 67 small blocks and in seeing the stripes in this image, more or less using the same markings (see my attached images below also)

It looks as though I've found a pretty good match on the green color (there are two green dots, one w/more blue...NOT that one ;) ) but I'm off a little on the lavender or pink (see dots on driveshaft) I found these paints at a "free to good home" at church. Crafts paint comes in SO MANY pre-mixed colors but with "soap & water" clean-up, I suppose care would need to be taken on preservation.

Hope this helps others

Time to dip the shaft in EvapoRust (Rust 911) and see how the colors look again.

+1  Easy clean up for kids and home projects = not going to last nor have any gloss. You'll end up with pasty looking flat marks that will not last from my experiences also

Help with my 68 C Code Automatic driveline markings.
« Reply #10 on: May 01, 2018, 02:36:17 PM »
First off let me thank everyone on this forum, I only wish I discovered it before tearing in to my 68.
Speaking of discoveries, I sometimes feel like Indian Jones on an archeological dig.

I found a few factory markings that I would love some help on to further along my restoration process.

This is for a 1968 C code with a C4 auto from the San Jose plant, 01B for the build date.
The rear diff tag is stamped WCZ-V1 2.79

I was looking for some help with the driveshaft factory markings (pink, light blue, white?) Also curious about the RA1(?) marked on the pumpkin with an “8” to denote the 8” gears?

Thanks in advance.

First welcome to the site. Hope that the information and help here are useful in your restoration projects and endeavours

What sort of help do you need here. They were marked with a brush and the driveline was rotated. You will find (using the search) some prior threads on how others have reproduced and fixtures to help apply them that the members have made.  Stripes went all the way around the tube

Not sure if you have found it already (lots of reading to do to catch up ;)   but there is an article in the Library - Paint Marks - The Basics  that may help. Not meant as a specific guide but as an oversight and help on the subject

Also curious about the RA1(?) marked on the pumpkin

Currently we don't understand the reasoning for every mark and with the decline of the number of workers still around we may never know them all but the focus is to reproduce what we find and not always apply the same markings to other cars.

The markings on the bottom of the rear end case/housing was something that came into practice during 67 production from what I've seen and documented. It normally included a series of numbers and letters but I have not found a worker who could explain (it would likely need to be a Sterling worker) the markings or anyone that has decoded them. Normally they are in poor condition due to jack usage and running over things it seems

with an “8” to denote the 8” gears?

May be for that purpose, though other 3rd members (other sizes)  were not typically marked to identify them. A similar mark has been documented on others from other years but not every year :)

Again welcome to the site

I have been through the 1968 section of your library. Some really cool stuff in there. I read through a few interesting threads dealing with the driveshaft rebuilds. Who knew I would be so excited to clean and sand a driveshaft. My girlfriend thinks I’m insane.

Guess my main question was about the correct colors. Hard to tell but I wanted to make sure I had the right colors for the tube. Saw some of your paint chips but magenta versus pink is where I get confused. Thanks.

Hopefully your still at the stage where you still have the paint examples on the tube. If so try first measure our where each one is on the tube, how wide each is and the other details  then try and remove just the top layer of paint from what is left. You can do this with some fine steel wool (only do a section so tape off half of the mark) to preserve it if things don't go well on the side your cleaning

Give the paint a swipe or two and then another until you remove the oxidized and discolored top layer. Wet that with a little water and a truer color should be visible. Get yourself some paints and mix a fair amount (maybe an 1/8 of a cup - you'll need to load up a 1/2" brush for the application one or twice) matching color, place it in a sealed container then save it for after you get the driveline restored.

Matching stock color names from a buildsheet always runs the risk of being off a little or allot but sometimes that is all than one has to work with and the reason some pictures can help in those cases. You on the other hand are blessed with the fact that you have the actual colors to match. Take advantage of that

Doing things yourself can be allot of fun and rewarding - enjoy
