original April '67 plug wires and cap (289) Metuchen built
« on: July 14, 2015, 07:41:27 PM »
What markings would be present on original plug wires and cap? ( I assume the cap would have Autolite on it)  Were there multiple suppliers for the wires....Autolite and Packard?

You need to give a indication of when the car in question was built . 67 was a transition year for both the wires and the caps. Packard was Chevy.

April '67.   I've seen wires with AUTOLITE on them presented as original, which makes sense.  I've also seen wires with PACKARD presented as original, which as you say, I know was used in other make cars.

April 67 helps. The fact that you have seen wires marked with AUTOLITE presented as original is not the issue. It is the other information on the wire that makes the difference. Early wires had no date code . Later wires had a date code . Early APRIL 67 could be ether way  2Q67 (second quarter 1967 ) or without a date code IMO. Later April would more likely have the date code.  As far as the Packard wires being presented as original ,I only know of one stubborn restoration shop owner of all the people that I have ever met in the Mustang world who insists in believing that Packard wires were used from the Ford factory delusion. I wonder if it is the same guy? Packard wires are typically GM.

Did all the original plug wires have the same insulator, with one being red?.  These wires themselves are all identical as are the ends for the cap and dated 2nd quarter '67.

Those wires have had some modifications done to the spark plug ends .

+1 at least three different styles and types of insulators

In rare examples (likely during the transition) I've seen a couple of red ones mixed with black ones but those were always (just me) service replacements. None found on original cars I recall

We use to by up all the NOS 6 cylinder wire sets just to take the boots off and reuse them on V8's

Was one of the plug wire ends red on originals...(if so, I assume it identifies the no.1 plug)

From what I'm seeing the vast majority of the time all the boots matched
