67 Throttle Return Spring & Bracket A-CODE
« on: July 03, 2015, 12:06:04 PM »
Noticing I have a different configuration on my A-code than what was recently pictured, I wondered what is CORRECT for a 67 A-Code.
This is what was recently pictured:

Notice, the carb is not a Mustang Carburetor, the kick-down linkage doesn't belong here.

If what is pictured above IS CORRECT, I need them! I'll start a new thread in "wanted" once confirmed

Found the same long intake manifold mounted spring "anchor"/bracket on the only pictures I have of the area other than one that used a 2V bracket but the carb had been replaced.........   ::)

Application happens to be a 67 Dearborn Cougar but believe that the brackets were installed at the engine plant and since they supplier all the plants this detail should be fairly uniform

spring bracket appears like 67 GT500. Springs does too but can't be sure from pics. If it is then Mansfield has them. You will have to look as I am typing on my I phone on a airplane. :o

Revisiting...
I bought the return spring bracket a few years ago when I visited this issue last.
It looks like a very good match to the picture that Jeff shared. Thank you Bob for that suggestion.

Now I am looking at the hardware to attach the bracket. I found the 42758-S2 bolts as AMK B12311 for phosphate & oil and if the same bracket would be used on 390 or other BB, AMK B-13233 for Zinc.
I previously purchased from AMK a pair of bolts AMK# F-709 (for the AC brace that is attached to the rearward hole, as pictured in Jeff's photo). The AMK# F-709 has one of the AMK# B-12311 phosphate bolts included.

Looked through my pictures and could not find anything to help you specifically with an A code AC application to help out this time. Apparently not allot of us take close up nice pictures of every nut and bolt though it would ahve been helpful :)

I can only comment as it relates to where the same bracket was used on the 67 GT500 intake and in that case the bolts appeared to be zinc silver .

Today, I stumbled onto the pages in the Osborne 67 CHASSIS manual, (page 40 & 41), which cover the engine-mounted throttle return spring bracket(s) and associated hardware. The 2-pages cover manual trans & auto 67 Mustangs, all V-8 engines.

Dead center, top of page 41 is 289-4V AUTO TRANS, which is what I was looking to know. My questions for what I need have now been answered. CORRECT BOLTS for 289 4V-Auto Trans are also 42758-S8 (zinc, like the big block M.T. 390's use in the same location).

FWIW, Notice the return spring hardware differences on big block vs. small blocks AND the opposite usage of return spring brackets between all-4 combinations (both engines, M.T. option & Auto Trans option). A quick glance, you may miss my point.

My point? You may notice how on page 40, it shows 289's with a carb stud-mounted return spring bracket for M.T. cars while on page 41,the auto trans 4V's have the manifold mounted bracket...then look at how it is just the exact opposite on the 390's. STRANGE!

Jim, did I miss the spreadsheet having a line-listing for the 289's using 42758-S8 on the 4V-Auto Trans applications?

When you can't find a particular application but do have the part number, use the spreadsheet by part number (MHW67-68PN05.xlsx). What description I've used for the application sort is consistent for all years, at least I try to be consistent. P/N 42758-S8 uses a description of: ACCELERATOR ROD RETAINING SPRING-ENG,390.
NOTE: View "Z" on page 41 of AM020 (67 Chassis) in the lower left should read 289 4V; view "Z" in the upper center should read 390 4V. Ford got them crossed. See page 40. (Ford Motor Company "saved money" by not using drafting checkers.)

Then this whole witch hunt I am on is INCORRECT ?  Clearly, we need more unmolested 67 289-4V's to confirm Ford is the one in error. It is either both Jeff's shared example AND the Assembly manual is correct, or Ford is incorrect...The jury in my head is convening...

ON EDIT: My "jury" decided to view the evidence found in the 68 MPC and the jury finds that it looks more like the Assembly manual may be correct (if this is how they were actually built). The "jury" finds the 9737 spring lengths as their only guide, The jury cannot seem to find the 9A733 brackets. The jury claims "poor skills at reading the MPC" may prove to be at fault too, so...the deliberation continues.

"Point of order"  ;)   Using a 68 Assembly manual to determine 67 details??

Agree more compelling original evidence is needed

no. 68 Master Parts Catalog, not Assembly Manual.

Here is info from both the 67 and 68 (60-68) MPC.  I did not look at the assembly manual yet - not handy at the moment.
